Atlanta Braves Target Edwin Diaz for Bullpen Reinforcement
As the offseason heats up, the Atlanta Braves are emerging as a potential contender for one of Major League Baseball’s most coveted closers. According to MLB insider Ken Rosenthal, the Braves have set their sights on Edwin Diaz, the all-star closer currently with the New York Mets. This pursuit comes on the heels of Diaz opting out of the final two years of his contract after a standout season.
Diaz, who made his third all-star appearance this past year, delivered an impressive performance, posting a 1.63 ERA and a 0.87 WHIP—his second-best and third-best marks in those categories, respectively. With Raisel Iglesias departing Atlanta, the Braves find themselves in need of a top-tier closer, making Diaz an appealing target.
Increased Payroll and Bullpen Priorities
Rosenthal highlights the Braves’ intent to boost their payroll as a driving factor behind their interest in Diaz. Although the team’s primary focus remains on shoring up starting pitching and securing a shortstop, the allure of Diaz’s talent could prompt general manager Alex Anthopoulos to prioritize the bullpen in an unusual move.
This offseason, the Braves have also added two members of the Mets’ coaching staff, including pitching coach Jeremy Hefner. This connection could prove advantageous in courting Diaz, as familiarity with the coaching staff may influence his decision.
Speed is of the Essence
While the Braves consider their options, the urgency to act is palpable. The market for top free agents, including closers, is expected to be competitive. Reports indicate that Iglesias could attract early interest from multiple teams, heightening the need for the Braves to act swiftly.
Securing Diaz would provide Atlanta with a younger, impactful closer—Diaz will turn 32 before the start of the season, a significant difference compared to the aging Iglesias. The projected contract for Diaz hovers around $18.3 million per year, translating to a four-year deal worth approximately $73.2 million. This investment would potentially secure Diaz’s prime years and enhance the Braves’ bullpen significantly.
The Variability of Diaz’s Performance
However, it’s important to note that Diaz’s performance can be erratic; while he has shown the ability to maintain an ERA below 2.00 in some seasons, he has also experienced stretches where his ERA exceeded 3.00. His only truly subpar season came in 2019, which raises questions about consistency.
Despite potential offseason priorities and the risk of being outbid, Diaz represents a compelling addition to the Braves’ bullpen. If they cannot secure him, another viable closer option exists in Robert Suarez, who has also been mentioned as a potential fit for Atlanta.
The Braves are poised for a pivotal offseason, and the pursuit of Edwin Diaz could reshape their bullpen and ultimately their competitive landscape in the league.
