Braves Secure Chris Sale with $18 Million Option for 2024

The Atlanta Braves have officially locked in their ace, Chris Sale, for the 2024 season by exercising his $18 million club option. This decision, widely anticipated within the organization, solidifies Sale’s place in the Braves’ rotation for at least one more year.

A Stellar Season in Atlanta

Since joining the Braves, Sale has consistently demonstrated his elite pitching prowess. In 2023, he made 21 appearances, including 20 starts, achieving a 7-5 record alongside an impressive 2.58 ERA and a 1.06 WHIP. His performance was marked by 165 strikeouts over 125 2/3 innings, earning him a spot as an All-Star for the ninth time in his career. Despite enduring a two-month injury hiatus, Sale remained a finalist for the All-MLB Team, showcasing his resilience and skill.

After returning from injury, Sale resumed his dominance on the mound, posting a 2.72 ERA in his final six starts. He allowed more than two runs in only three of those outings, a testament to his ability to maintain high standards of performance even after setbacks.

From Near Retirement to Cy Young Winner

Sale’s journey to this point has been anything but straightforward. Prior to his trade to the Braves, whispers circulated that the veteran left-hander might consider retirement. However, the change in scenery and the subsequent contract extension revitalized his career. He not only won the Cy Young Award for the first time but also received his first Gold Glove Award, alongside being named the Comeback Player of the Year.

Injuries have been a recurring theme in Sale’s career, but his experience allows him to navigate these challenges effectively and return to form swiftly.

Looking Ahead: Milestones on the Horizon

As Sale approaches his 37th birthday, several significant milestones lie ahead. With 149 career wins to his name, he is on the brink of achieving his 150th victory, a notable benchmark for any pitcher. Furthermore, he is poised to climb the all-time strikeout leaderboard. If he reaches the 200-strikeout mark again, he will surpass several legendary pitchers, including Tom Glavine, Warren Spahn, and Bob Feller.

The future beyond the 2024 season remains uncertain, but for now, Braves fans can look forward to another year of Chris Sale delivering his best on the mound. His continued presence in the rotation is a promising sign for the team’s aspirations as they aim for further success.
