Arizona Diamondbacks’ bullpen gamble: GM Hazen eyes unexpected “bridge” closer to fill void

Date:

Arizona Diamondbacks’ Bullpen Dilemma

The Arizona Diamondbacks find themselves in a precarious situation as the offseason progresses. With no designated closer in sight, the team is grappling with their options as the market for proven ninth-inning relievers has largely dried up. General Manager Mike Hazen and his front office opted not to invest heavily in top-tier free agent arms, which has left the bullpen lacking a clear leader.

Shifting Priorities in Free Agency

While it may have been unrealistic to anticipate landing elite closers like Edwin Diaz or Devin Williams, the D-backs faced disappointment even in securing mid-tier options. Pete Fairbanks, for instance, signed a one-year, $13 million deal with the Miami Marlins, a move that underscored the competitive landscape for relief pitching and highlighted the Diamondbacks’ reluctance to spend big.

Minor Moves with Major Implications

As it stands, Arizona’s bullpen has seen only minor league additions, leaving fans wondering about the team’s strategy. However, recent insights from Arizona Sports 98.7’s John Gambadoro suggest that the Diamondbacks are indeed eyeing a solution. The team appears to be targeting what Gambadoro refers to as a “bridge” closer—someone who can fill the void in the meantime.

The Plan for a Bridge Closer

Gambadoro shared that the Diamondbacks are looking for a reliever who can step in and handle closing duties until key players like A.J. Puk and J.B. Bukauskas return from injury. This approach allows Arizona to maintain some stability in their bullpen without committing to a high-profile arm.

“I do expect Arizona to land a bridge closer—someone who can close games until Puk and JMart get back, then fall into a set-up role,” Gambadoro noted. This indicates a strategic pivot towards flexibility, allowing the team to adapt as their injured pitchers make their way back into the fold.

Looking Ahead

As the offseason continues, the Diamondbacks’ front office must navigate the challenges of filling the closer role while remaining prudent with their budget. While the search for a standout ninth-inning option may be on hold, the focus on acquiring a bridge closer could serve as a temporary solution that pays dividends in the long run. The coming weeks will be crucial as Arizona seeks to solidify their bullpen and prepare for the challenges ahead in the upcoming season.
