Adrian Houser Returns to Chicago with Tampa Bay Rays
Adrian Houser, a former standout for the Chicago White Sox, is set to face his old team for the first time since his trade to the Tampa Bay Rays. The Trade That Changed Everything
On May 20, the White Sox signed Houser to a one-year deal worth $1.35 million, creating space on their 40-man roster by designating right-hander Yoendrys Gomez for assignment. Fast forward nearly four months, and both Houser and Gomez will take the mound as the starting pitchers in this intriguing clash at 6:40 p.m. CT.
Houser began the season with Triple-A Round Rock and quickly made his mark with the White Sox, posting an impressive 2.10 ERA over 68.2 innings across 11 starts. His efforts even earned him consideration for the All-Star Game. As the team shifted its focus towards rebuilding, Houser was traded at the deadline for three promising prospects: infielder Curtis Mead and pitchers Duncan Davitt and Ben Peoples. General manager Chris Getz expressed pride in both Houser’s contributions and the return the team received.
“Credit to [Houser] with his performance in a White Sox uniform,” Getz stated on July 31. “We were able to identify some changes in what Adrian was working on in Triple-A and convert that into a successful signing. To think we were able to find three players that feel like they can be part of our Major League club in the near future, that’s pretty remarkable work overall.”
Houser’s Struggles in Tampa Bay
Since joining the Rays, Houser has faced challenges on the mound, recording a 4.91 ERA and a 1.42 WHIP through his first six starts. His debut with Tampa Bay was particularly tough, as he allowed a season-high 11 hits and five earned runs against the Los Angeles Angels. A solid five-inning shutout against the San Francisco Giants on August 16 offered a glimmer of hope, yet he has struggled to maintain consistency, allowing at least four earned runs in four of his six outings.
In his most recent start against the Seattle Mariners, Houser struck out a season-high eight batters but still surrendered four earned runs. This blend of familiarity and competition adds a unique dynamic to Tuesday’s game.
White Sox Look to Extend Winning Streak
As the White Sox prepare for this pivotal matchup, manager Will Venable emphasized the importance of consistency in their gameplay, especially after winning seven of their last eight games—their best stretch of the season.
“I don’t think it’s any different,” Venable said. “It’s about continuing to do the things we’ve been doing and know we have to do to play well. In the case of Adrian, we loved having him here. He’s a great competitor and a great teammate. So we know we’ll have our work cut out for us.”
Curtis Mead’s Journey with the White Sox
Curtis Mead, the only player from the trade who has seen Major League action, is a focal point for the White Sox. Since joining the team, he has posted a career-high .274 batting average and an OPS of .660 over 102 plate appearances. Mead, who has experienced a rollercoaster ride between the majors and minors, is now finding his footing in Chicago, starting in each of the last 11 games.
On Tuesday, he will be starting at third base and batting seventh against his former team. The other two prospects acquired in the trade, Duncan Davitt and Ben Peoples, have also been making strides within the White Sox organization, each navigating their early careers in the minor leagues.
Davitt holds a 4.38 ERA and a 1.18 WHIP over seven starts for the Triple-A Charlotte Knights, while Peoples has faced some struggles as a reliever, giving up seven earned runs in 11.1 innings.
