Team Ferrari boss Frederic Vasseur believes that the impressive performance of the team at the Japanese Grand Prix demonstrates that they have effectively solved their tire wear issues. Vasseur’s first season in charge was challenging, as the team struggled with an unpredictable car that was particularly affected by windy conditions. Although Ferrari managed to secure a victory last season, they often struggled to convert their strong qualifying pace into race results. However, the team has made significant progress with their new SF-24 car, which has proven to be kinder to Pirelli tires compared to its predecessor. Despite starting in fourth and eighth places on the grid in Suzuka, Carlos Sainz Jr. continued Ferrari’s podium streak this season by finishing in third place, with Charles Leclerc right behind him. Vasseur expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance, stating that the strategy, tire management, and pit stop execution were perfect. He also acknowledged the need to improve performance on Saturdays, but overall, he was pleased with the team’s efforts and teamwork. Leclerc’s race was particularly impressive, as he managed to complete the entire race with just one pit stop, using the hard compound tires for 27 laps. This allowed him to secure fourth place ahead of McLaren’s Lando Norris, who had qualified in third. Vasseur highlighted that both stints went well for Leclerc, especially considering the early pit stop they made. The final stint, which lasted about 30 laps on the hard compound tires, was ambitious compared to what Mercedes did. However, the degradation of Ferrari’s tires was minimal, although it is unlikely that they could have extended for another 20 laps. Overall, the team effectively managed their tires and positions throughout the race.
Meanwhile, Sainz extended his second stint to gain an advantage in the final laps, which he used to overtake both Norris and Leclerc and secure another spot on the podium. When asked if the race confirmed that Ferrari is on the right track, Vasseur replied: “I believe that since the beginning of the season, we have made significant improvements in tire management and wear minimization.”
“We achieved the fastest lap in Jeddah and Melbourne on the last lap. Today, we were just a tenth away from achieving the same result. I believe we have taken a big step forward in this aspect. We have put in a lot of effort to address our weaknesses and have made significant improvements in tire management, driver performance, strategy, and teamwork.”
“However, there are still areas where we need to improve if we want to perform even better. We cannot ignore our other weaknesses.” Vasseur also warned that Ferrari’s previous tire wear issues may resurface and it is crucial for the team to manage their race-to-race prospects.
“I believe we currently have good control over this aspect,” he continued. “However, we must remember that what is true today may not necessarily be true tomorrow in terms of tire management. We cannot consider this matter resolved. Next week, in China, we will face a different track surface and weather conditions, which will present us with a new challenge.”
Ferrari had been considered the strongest team in the race practice sessions, but Sainz, who finished in third place, ended up 20 seconds behind Max Verstappen, who led a Red Bull one-two. When asked if he agreed with speculations that higher temperatures during the race favored Red Bull, he replied: “I believe we will have the opportunity to test that theory in colder conditions in China.”
“I am unsure because we only experienced colder conditions during FP3. I am not convinced we were in a better position. Various factors, such as engine settings and fuel levels, can influence performance. Both us and Red Bull had tire wear under control on Saturday, and it was practically identical during today’s race.”
