Daniel Ricciardo seems to have lost all potential opportunities in Formula 1 after Sergio Perez’s contract renewal by Red Bull.
A decade ago, Ricciardo was considered a promising contender for the F1 world championship. He had triumphed over the four-time world champion at Red Bull. However, circumstances have drastically changed over the years, leaving the Australian driver struggling to stay in the competition.
After leaving Red Bull at the end of 2018, Ricciardo went through a few disappointing seasons with Renault and McLaren. In 2022, the 34-year-old driver decided to part ways with McLaren and found himself on the sidelines. Fortunately, he was given another chance to prove his worth when AlphaTauri (now RB) called him up to replace Nyck de Vries.
Unfortunately, it seems that Ricciardo has failed to meet expectations. He hasn’t even been able to match his teammate, Yuki Tsunoda, this season. Consequently, the future prospects for Ricciardo in top-level motorsport look bleak as he missed out on the opportunity to be promoted to Red Bull next season.
During his time at Red Bull, Ricciardo reached the peak of his career after being promoted in 2014. However, his talent seemed to diminish after leaving Milton Keynes. Now, at 34 years old, he seems to be just a shadow of his former self, struggling to live up to the high expectations placed on him.
Ricciardo was hoping to regain a place at Red Bull in 2025, showcasing his skills at RB. Unfortunately, his time with the Faenza-based team may have done more harm than good to his career. He only managed to secure a few points, and the criticism he faced certainly had an impact on him. In response to Jacques Villeneuve’s recent comments, the 34-year-old driver even told him to “eat shit”.
The decision by Red Bull to extend Sergio Perez’s contract has dashed Ricciardo’s hopes for now. It is worth noting that Yuki Tsunoda would be in a better position to take Perez’s place if the Mexican driver had been released. As a result, Daniel Ricciardo finds himself without any real prospects for the future in Formula 1, as no team currently has him on their radar.
Undoubtedly, Ricciardo had the opportunity to redeem himself in Formula 1. However, unfortunately, he wasted that chance. The sport can be ruthless, and even if a driver has won eight times, they need to consistently perform if they want to secure a top-level seat. Thus, it seems that Ricciardo has reached a dead end in his career at the pinnacle of motorsport.
