Verstappen Dominates the Austrian Grand Prix Qualifying
Max Verstappen, from Red Bull Racing, showcased his unmatched skills on Saturday at the Austrian Grand Prix, securing his fourth consecutive pole position in Formula 1. With a time that was four tenths of a second faster than his nearest competitor, Verstappen left no doubts about his domination.
After his victory in Saturday morning’s Sprint, Verstappen and the rest of the Formula 1 field had to regroup and prepare for the Grand Prix qualifying in the afternoon. Expectations were high for Lando Norris, who was only 0.098s behind Verstappen’s time in the Sprint Qualifying on Friday. However, Verstappen proved to be in a league of his own during Saturday afternoon’s session, finishing 0.404s ahead of Norris in second place.
The stands at the Red Bull Ring resembled a sea of orange, as Verstappen’s loyal fans cheered him on during the initial Q1 session. The atmosphere resembled Zandvoort, adding to the excitement of the qualifying session under the Austrian sun.
Charles Leclerc from Ferrari had a disappointing qualifying in the Sprint on Friday, but made a strong comeback in the GP qualifying on Saturday, setting the fastest time in Q1. However, Mercedes’ George Russell quickly surpassed Leclerc with an impressive run of his own.
As the session progressed, several drivers including Valtteri Bottas, Logan Sargeant, Fernando Alonso, Pierre Gasly, and Lance Stroll were at risk of elimination. The competitive nature of the Formula 1 field was evident, with Carlos Sainz leading the times in Q1 by just 0.9s ahead of Sauber’s Zhou Guanyu.
Even Norris, who was temporarily in fourth place, had to do a third lap to secure his spot in the next session. Lewis Hamilton also faced a challenge, needing new tires to improve his position and avoid an early elimination.
In the end, Alex Albon missed out by just 0.080s, while Stroll struggled in 17th place. Bottas, Sargeant, and Zhou completed the Q1 classification, with the 20 drivers separated by just 0.798s.
With Alpine, Haas, and RB drivers advancing to Q2, the competition intensified as they sought to join the top 10 in the fight. As the clock approached the final 10 minutes, only four drivers had set a time, leading to a race of competitors coming out of the pits in search of their best lap.
Verstappen set a lap time of 1:04.577s, giving him a comfortable advantage of 0.439s over the rest of the field in Q2. Gasly, Yuki Tsunoda, Nico Hulkenberg, Kevin Magnussen, and Alonso found themselves in the elimination zone.
Despite his impressive speed, Verstappen still took part in the final minutes of Q2 but had no trouble staying out of the elimination zone. He even managed to improve his time to 1:04.469s with new soft tires.
On the other hand, Ricciardo missed out on qualifying for Q3 by just 0.015s, finishing in 11th place. Gasly also failed to reach Q3 after briefly going off track at Turn 6 on his final lap. Magnussen, Tsunoda, and Alonso completed the Q2 classification, highlighting Aston’s weak performance.
Verstappen seemed unbeatable heading into Q3, but the final positions of the remaining nine drivers were still uncertain. After the first fast laps, Verstappen was in first place with a lap time of 1:04.426s, giving him an advantage of over three tenths of a second over Norris in second place.
