Piastri was demoted from third to seventh position in Austria due to a track limits violation.
McLaren lodged a complaint with the FIA regarding the decision to invalidate Oscar Piastri’s fastest lap during qualifying for the Formula 1 Austrian Grand Prix, citing a track limits violation.
Piastri seemed to be continuing his successful weekend at the Red Bull Ring by securing third position on the leaderboard, just behind his McLaren teammate Lando Norris.
However, Piastri’s final lap time was subsequently annulled by the stewards, who determined that he had exceeded track limits at Turn 6, resulting in his original position being demoted to seventh.
The Australian driver criticized the situation, describing it as “embarrassing” and noted that the circuit had implemented additional gravel traps this season without using them to establish the limit.
McLaren chose to approach the FIA to obtain definitive evidence that Piastri had crossed the white line and has now taken the step of officially protesting the result.
