Auston Matthews praises Max Domi on the eve of season opener, highlighting potential for impact on Maple Leafs’ top line

Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews has voiced his high regard for Max Domi, a player expected to step into a crucial role this season. Following the departure of Mitch Marner in the offseason, Domi is set to join Matthews and Matthew Knies on the top line, a shift that carries significant expectations.

Familiar Faces on the Ice

Domi and Matthews have shared the ice before, establishing a rapport that Matthews believes will be beneficial as they head into the new season. Ahead of the opening night showdown, the captain emphasized Domi’s strengths, describing him as an “easy player to play with.”

“He’s really patient with the puck,” Matthews noted, highlighting Domi’s ability to create offensive opportunities. “He’s really good at drawing guys into him and finding lanes. He can pass on his forehand, he can pass on his backhand, and he’s really strong on the puck too.”

Matthews underscored his familiarity with Domi’s playing style, stating, “I just try to support him and get open, and I know that I have to be ready at all times because the puck can come whenever.” The captain’s confidence in Domi’s skills could prove vital as the team seeks to fill the offensive void left by Marner.

The Challenge Ahead

While Domi may not replicate Marner’s scoring prowess, his versatility presents a different set of assets. Matthews expressed his comfort with Domi’s game, saying, “I’m really comfortable with him, and I know the spots that he likes to get into as well as Kniesy.” He believes that as they continue to practice together, their chemistry will strengthen.

Last season, Matthews recorded an impressive 78 points, including 33 goals and 45 assists in 67 games. In contrast, Domi’s performance saw him tally just 33 points from 8 goals and 25 assists over 74 games.

Coaching Perspectives

Maple Leafs coach Craig Berube shared insights on Domi’s role, emphasizing the need for the veteran forward to embrace a more aggressive style of play. “With Max, we have to let him play his game and what he’s good at, but at the same time, he has to change a little bit,” Berube commented. He urged Domi to shoot more frequently and engage more in offensive plays, rather than solely looking for his linemates.

“I need him to get inside more,” Berube continued. “He’s got to shoot pucks, he’s got to use his shot. We need him to be a bulldog out there.” The coach’s call for defensive responsibility echoes his expectations for the entire team as they prepare for a demanding season.

Looking Ahead

Despite concerns that the Maple Leafs may take a step back following Marner’s exit, Domi remains optimistic about the team’s potential. He believes that their ability to be “hard to play against” will be pivotal. “Teams are going to know, when they see our team on the schedule, that’s gonna be a tough night,” Domi stated, emphasizing the importance of establishing strong habits in practice.

As the Maple Leafs gear up for their season opener against the Montreal Canadiens on October 8, the focus will be on how well Domi can integrate into his new role and whether he can help the team maintain its competitive edge in the league.
