Braxton Key bids farewell to Warriors as Memphis Grizzlies offer fresh start for former G-League standout

Braxton Key’s Departure from Warriors Paves Way for New Opportunity in Memphis

In the ever-evolving landscape of the NBA, transitions are inevitable. As the Golden State Warriors finalize their roster with the additions of promising talents like Jonathan Kuminga, Al Horford, Seth Curry, De’Anthony Melton, and Gary Payton II, the brief tenure of Braxton Key with the team has come to a close.

Key, a 6-foot-8 forward and former champion, joined the Warriors on a two-way contract last March. His strong performance during that time earned him a standard contract by mid-April, showcasing his ability to seize an opportunity. However, despite his successful stint in the G-League, where he claimed a championship with the Delaware Blue Coats and was honored as the Defensive Player of the Year with the Memphis Hustle, his impact in the NBA was limited.

Over the course of the 2024-25 season, Key averaged just one point and 0.7 rebounds in three regular-season games, spending an average of only 3.7 minutes on the court. His postseason contributions mirrored this trend, with numbers dipping to 0.4 points and 1.8 rebounds across five playoff appearances.

Recognizing the shifting dynamics within the Warriors’ roster, Key signed a training camp deal with the Memphis Grizzlies last Wednesday. This move indicates his awareness of the team’s direction and the conclusion of his time in Golden State after less than a full season.

For Key, the Grizzlies present a fresh start and a chance to carve out a more significant role in the NBA. As a member of the 2022 G-League All-Defensive Team, his defensive prowess could be a valuable asset for Memphis. If he can find his niche and contribute effectively, he may enhance his chances of securing a lasting position in the league.

In a league where opportunities can be fleeting, Key’s journey serves as a reminder of the constant changes players face and the resilience required to adapt and thrive.
