Blackhawks Eye Reunion with Joshua Roy to Elevate Connor Bedard’s Game
Connor Bedard, the Chicago Blackhawks’ prized No. 1 overall pick, has recently expressed high regard for Joshua Roy, a player who could potentially amplify Bedard’s impact in the NHL. Their synergy was first highlighted during the 2023 IIHF World Junior Ice Hockey Championships, where Canada clinched the gold medal by edging out Czechia 3-2 in a nail-biting overtime finish.
Roy Shines on the International Stage
During the tournament, Roy showcased his talents with a remarkable performance, notably earning the primary assist on Dylan Guenther’s championship-clinching goal. He concluded the event with an impressive tally of five goals and six assists, ranking fourth overall in scoring across seven games. Bedard, who led the tournament in scoring, was quick to recognize Roy’s exceptional skills.
“He’s the player that’s kind of popped to me the most,” Bedard remarked ahead of the tournament. “I didn’t know too much about him before the summer, and he’s unbelievable. You watch him in practice, and I don’t think he misses a shot. He’s so smart. He’s someone I love watching.”
Roy’s brilliance continued during the semifinal against the United States, where he netted two goals and contributed two assists in a commanding 6-2 victory. Bedard couldn’t hide his admiration, stating, “He was unreal. He’s one of the smartest players that I’ve got to play with, and how he dominated that game and stepped up his game when it mattered most is incredible.”
A Potential Fit for the Blackhawks
As the Blackhawks navigate their roster ahead of Bedard’s third NHL season, general manager Kyle Davidson faces the challenge of surrounding the young star with the right talent. With Roy now 22 years old and having established a rapport with Bedard, he could be the versatile player that elevates Chicago’s offensive dynamics.
The Montreal Canadiens may find themselves open to discussions, especially given Roy’s current standing. A fifth-round pick in 2021, Roy is entering the final season of his entry-level contract. The pressure is on him, as his impact in the NHL has yet to match expectations. His early preseason performances have raised concerns, leading to his recent demotion to the AHL after the Canadiens’ initial cuts.
“I thought Joshua Roy, for a guy who had a lot to prove, didn’t play like a guy who had a lot to prove,” said Shaun Starr from TSN 690 radio, reflecting on Roy’s lackluster showing. “What are we talking about here with Joshua Roy in terms of where he goes next? I mean, where he goes next within the workings of the Montreal Canadiens?”
A Change of Scenery?
Analysts like Marco D’Amico have recognized Roy’s skill set but share doubts about his future with Montreal. “There’s enough hype from him still from his Team Canada days in the World Juniors that I believe there is still value,” D’Amico noted. “I just don’t think it’s going to be for the Montreal Canadiens at this point. I think he needs a change of scenery.”
This change could be precisely what Roy needs, particularly in a rebuilding team filled with emerging talent like the Blackhawks. “Maybe, who knows, they would like the thought of reuniting Bedard and Roy, who Bedard loved playing with internationally, so maybe that works,” D’Amico speculated.
There’s also a growing sense that if Roy performs well in the AHL, interest from other teams, including the Blackhawks, could intensify. “He was a player that I’ve heard was involved in trade talks this summer,” D’Amico added, indicating that while those discussions didn’t progress far then, the landscape could shift as the season unfolds.
Looking Ahead to the Season
With the regular season set to kick off on October 7 against Florida, the Blackhawks are still finalizing their roster, particularly who will skate alongside Bedard. The cost for the Blackhawks to explore a reunion with Roy might not be steep, potentially requiring just a third- or fourth-round pick. As Chicago continues its search for the right mix, the prospect of Roy joining the team could provide Bedard with the support he needs to reach new heights.
