Unknown to Lakers fans, Jeenathan Williams aims to make his mark in LA after stint with Rockets

Jeenathan Williams: The Lakers’ Hidden Gem from Houston

The Los Angeles Lakers’ training camp roster features few surprises, yet one name stands out: Jeenathan Williams. While not a household name in the basketball community, his presence at camp piques interest, especially given his recent stint with the Houston Rockets. The decision to include him speaks volumes about the Lakers’ assessment of his potential.

From Rochester to the NBA

Standing at 6-foot-5 and sporting a left-handed shot, Jeenathan Williams hails from Rochester, New York. His basketball journey began at University Prep before he took his talents to Prolific Prep in California, where he further honed his skills. After a successful high school career, he returned to his home state to play college basketball at the University at Buffalo.

Williams has navigated through three seasons in the NBA, with stops at the Portland Trail Blazers and the Houston Rockets. Over the course of 47 games, he has averaged 3.9 points, 1.1 rebounds, 0.6 assists, and 0.3 steals.

The Game-Changing Skill

While his numbers may not jump off the page, the key to Williams’ future lies in his shooting ability. He’s struggled from beyond the arc, shooting just 28.2% from three-point range. This statistic could ultimately determine whether he secures a lasting role with the Lakers. His athleticism and length make him an intriguing prospect, and the Lakers could envision him as a valuable asset, even within their G League affiliate in South Bay.

A Learning Opportunity

For Williams, joining the Lakers presents a unique opportunity to learn from some of the best in the game. As he strives to solidify his place in the NBA, this training camp could be the stepping stone he needs to prove his worth. With determination and the right guidance, Jeenathan Williams aims to carve out a niche for himself in Los Angeles—a city known for its storied basketball legacy.
