Rockets eye Derrick White as game-changing trade target to replace VanVleet amid Celtics’ potential gap year

Rockets Pursue Derrick White as Key Trade Target Following VanVleet Injury

The Houston Rockets find themselves at a crossroads as they navigate a pivotal offseason. With the unfortunate ACL tear sidelining former All-Star point guard Fred VanVleet for a significant portion of the upcoming season, the Rockets are seeking a transformative addition to their roster. The latest name to emerge in trade discussions is Boston Celtics guard Derrick White, a player who could provide the competitive edge Houston is desperately craving.

Celtics’ Trade Landscape Shifts

As the NBA landscape evolves, the Celtics appear to be in a transitional phase, often referred to as a “gap year.” This situation has opened the door for trade speculation, particularly surrounding key players who may be on the move. Recent analysis from sports commentator Brad Botkin highlights a range of potential trade targets for the Rockets, including notable names such as Indiana Pacers’ Andrew Nembhard, Portland’s Jrue Holiday, and Washington’s C.J. McCollum. However, it is White who stands out as the prime candidate.

Botkin emphasizes, “We’re swinging for the fences right out of the gate, and so should the Rockets. Boston is in a gap year. White is a considerable upgrade from VanVleet and is locked up for the next four years, so this wouldn’t, unlike a few other options we’ll talk about, be a short-term solution.”

Derrick White: A Game-Changer for Houston

Acquiring White would represent a significant step forward for the Rockets. His performance last season with the Celtics was nothing short of impressive. Over the course of 76 games, White averaged a career-high 16.4 points, complemented by 4.8 assists and 4.5 rebounds while maintaining efficient shooting splits of .442 from the field, .384 from three-point range, and .839 from the free-throw line. Furthermore, although he fell short of making the All-Defensive Team, his defensive prowess was recognized with a 10th-place finish in Defensive Player of the Year voting.

Botkin notes, “White is the new Jrue Holiday. A winner in every sense and the perfect fit alongside any star in any system. If you’re on the cusp of contention, he’s the guy to put you over the top.” This sentiment encapsulates what the Rockets are looking for—a player who can elevate their standing in the league and complement their existing talent.

The Cost of Acquisition

While the Rockets may have the motivation to pursue White, the challenge lies in the potential cost. The Celtics’ admiration for White complicates matters; he is highly regarded within their organization, making a trade unlikely without substantial compensation. Botkin suggests that if Boston were to entertain offers, it would require significant assets from Houston.

Fortunately for the Rockets, they possess a wealth of draft capital and promising young talent. Players like Reed Sheppard, Jabari Smith Jr., and Tari Eason could be enticing elements in a trade package. It’s a scenario that warrants serious consideration, particularly in light of the VanVleet injury.

Looking Ahead

As the Rockets reevaluate their roster strategy, Derrick White has emerged as a prime target. With Boston potentially open to reconfiguring its lineup, Houston’s pursuit of White could be a pivotal move in their quest for competitiveness. The coming weeks will be critical, as discussions regarding White and other trade options unfold. The Rockets must act decisively, as the window for capitalizing on their assets may be limited.
