Cowboys, 49ers, Bucs eye Miami’s Jaelan Phillips as potential trade target

As the NFL trade deadline approaches, several teams are scrambling to bolster their rosters, particularly in the quest for a reliable edge rusher. Among those teams, the Dallas Cowboys, San Francisco 49ers, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers are prominently considering trade options. Each franchise is grappling with its own challenges in terms of pass rush effectiveness, making Miami Dolphins EDGE Jaelan Phillips an intriguing target.

Cowboys Struggle in Pass Rush

The Cowboys made headlines when they traded away Micah Parsons, a decision that has severely hampered their pass-rushing capabilities. Through three games, Dallas has managed to secure only four sacks—an alarming statistic that has raised concerns about their defensive prowess. The team’s inability to pressure opposing quarterbacks could jeopardize their season if not addressed soon.

49ers Deal with Injury Woes

Meanwhile, the 49ers are facing a significant blow with the season-ending injury to star pass rusher Nick Bosa, who suffered a torn ACL. This loss compounds their existing struggles, as San Francisco has recorded just five sacks so far this season. The absence of Bosa not only affects the pass rush but also places additional pressure on the defensive unit as a whole.

Buccaneers Need Depth

In Tampa Bay, the situation is equally precarious. The rookie outside linebacker David Walker has been sidelined with a torn ACL, drastically affecting the team’s depth at the position. With the defensive line already stretched thin, the Buccaneers may soon find themselves in the market for additional talent to shore up their pass rush.

Jaelan Phillips: A Prime Trade Target

All three teams are reportedly eyeing Jaelan Phillips, an EDGE rusher for the Miami Dolphins, as a potential solution. Recently highlighted by Pro Football & Sports Network’s Josh Weil, Phillips could be the answer to their pressing needs. If the Dolphins find themselves out of playoff contention, they may be inclined to entertain offers for Phillips.

With a career total of 23 sacks over 49 games, Phillips has demonstrated significant potential, especially during his first three NFL seasons when 22 of his sacks were recorded. However, injuries have plagued him, including an Achilles tear in 2023 and a torn ACL in 2024. Now, as he returns to form, Phillips could become a game-changer for a team that secures his services.

The Bidding War Scenario

If the Dolphins decide to part ways with Phillips, it could ignite a bidding war among interested teams. His ability to impact the game when healthy makes him a valuable asset, and the prospect of acquiring him could be enticing enough to prompt aggressive negotiations.

As the trade deadline looms, all eyes will be on Phillips and the potential moves that could reshape the pass-rushing landscape for the Cowboys, 49ers, and Buccaneers. The urgency to enhance their defensive lines may very well hinge on who makes the first move in pursuit of this talented EDGE rusher.
