Nick Robertson aims to turn Leafs’ roster roulette into winning hand with breakout season in Toronto

Nick Robertson’s Quest for Stability with the Maple Leafs

As the Toronto Maple Leafs gear up for the new season, they face a series of challenging roster decisions. Among the players seeking a permanent place in the lineup is Nick Robertson, a forward who has showcased his offensive talent but has struggled to secure a consistent role. Despite requesting a trade last offseason, Robertson remained with the team, and speculation about his future continues to swirl. However, NHL insider Greg Wyshynski of ESPN anticipates that Robertson will stay in Toronto throughout the season.

A Parallel to Timothy Liljegren

Wyshynski draws an interesting parallel between Robertson and defenseman Timothy Liljegren, who was traded after several years with the Maple Leafs without solidifying his spot in the lineup. “This could be Timothy Liljegren 2.0,” Wyshynski noted, emphasizing the similarities in their situations. Robertson, now 24 and entering his sixth year with the franchise, signed a one-year extension ahead of salary arbitration. His past request for a trade raises questions about his long-term commitment to the team, but when asked if he still wants to be in Toronto, he simply stated, “Right now, I’m here.”

A Chance to Shine

Robertson’s future with the team seems promising, as the Maple Leafs are reportedly giving him the opportunity to compete for a top-six role this season. With Mitch Marner currently in Vegas, the team is looking for players who can contribute secondary scoring, and Robertson fits that bill. Wyshynski predicts that instead of being traded, Robertson will find his niche and thrive, bringing much-needed offensive support to the lineup.

Impressive Performance in Training Camp

Entering training camp, Robertson knows he must earn his roster spot. Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube has taken notice of his strong performance in practices and preseason games. “Nicky’s a hard worker who puts the puck in the net,” Berube remarked. “He scores goals and he’s definitely a part of this team, and we’ll see where he fits.” The coach acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding player placements, but he expressed confidence in Robertson’s abilities. “I think he’s a valuable player, and we like Nick. He works hard, is a good skater, and we’re glad he’s here.”

Contract Year Mindset

This offseason, Robertson signed a one-year contract extension worth $1.825 million, which adds further incentive for him to perform. While he competes for a roster spot, Robertson emphasizes that his primary focus is on his performance rather than the business side of the game. “I don’t really want to go into it. I think that’s just part of the business side. I’m just happy it worked out like that,” he said. “It’s a contract year. My mindset is coming in and working hard and improving myself, regardless of whether I sign an eight-year deal or a one-year deal.”

Last Season’s Performance

In the previous season, Robertson played 69 games, recording 15 goals and 7 assists for a total of 22 points. As he approaches the new season, he is determined to build on that performance and solidify his place on the Maple Leafs roster. With a blend of talent, work ethic, and a desire to contribute, Nick Robertson is poised to turn the uncertainty of the past into a successful season ahead in Toronto.
