Manny Machado’s Respect for Kershaw Amidst NL West Showdown

The rivalry between the San Diego Padres and the Los Angeles Dodgers is reaching a fever pitch as both teams set their sights on the NL West title. With the postseason on the horizon, the stakes have never been higher, but even in the heat of competition, respect flows between players. One notable example is Padres third baseman Manny Machado’s admiration for Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw.

Kershaw’s Legacy

Earlier this month, Kershaw, a future Hall of Famer, announced his decision to retire after a storied career that has solidified his status as one of the game’s greats. He leaves behind a legacy highlighted by three NL Cy Young Awards and the 2014 NL MVP award. In a recent interview with The Sporting Tribune, Machado reflected on Kershaw’s impact on the game and the respect he commands, despite the rivalry.

“We’re losing a legend and he’s leaving on top,” Machado remarked, acknowledging the significance of Kershaw’s career. “It’s awesome to have been able to wear the same uniform as him, play behind him. To see it firsthand and hit a couple of homers off of a legend is pretty cool as well.” Machado’s words resonate with a sense of camaraderie that often transcends team loyalties.

Looking Ahead to October

As both teams prepare for the playoffs, Machado expressed hope for a potential rematch against Kershaw. “He’s one of the best competitors that this game has ever seen,” he noted, emphasizing Kershaw’s tenacity and skill. “I told him, wishing him nothing but the best, and hopefully our paths cross once again.”

Machado himself is having a stellar season, boasting a batting average of .273 along with 26 home runs and 93 RBIs, showcasing his consistent excellence in the lineup. With the postseason looming, both he and Kershaw will be eager to leave their mark in what could be the final chapter of Kershaw’s illustrious career.

As the Padres and Dodgers continue their battle for supremacy in the NL West, the mutual respect between players like Machado and Kershaw adds depth to this fierce rivalry, reminding fans that the game is as much about competition as it is about honoring its legends.
