Falcons hope Darnell Mooney can reignite their deep passing game and unlock Atlanta’s true offensive potential

Falcons Eye Darnell Mooney to Revitalize Deep Passing Game

The Atlanta Falcons are yearning for a spark in their passing attack, and Darnell Mooney could be the player to reignite their offensive potential. After missing all of training camp due to a shoulder injury, the veteran wide receiver made his return in the team’s Week 2 showdown against the Minnesota Vikings. His presence is increasingly seen as vital in enhancing Atlanta’s deep passing game.

Mooney’s Return and Expectations

Mooney’s absence during the offseason raised concerns about how his integration into the offense would unfold. Last season, he showcased his ability as a deep threat, recording a career-high 15.5 yards per reception. The anticipation surrounding a pairing with a quarterback like Michael Penix Jr., known for his powerful arm, was high. Many viewed this combination as the catalyst needed to elevate Atlanta’s aerial attack.

However, the anticipated fireworks have yet to materialize. Despite being healthy, Mooney’s contributions have not matched expectations as the season progresses.

“That’s definitely a goal that we have, to get him involved,” Falcons head coach Raheem Morris stated. “He’s in week two of really coming back. I’m fired up to see what he does in week three and week four, and then progressing, obviously, past the bye and what’s going to happen next.”

Struggles in Connection

In his two games back, Mooney has been targeted 15 times but has managed to secure only six passes for 64 yards. This lack of production has drawn attention to the chemistry—or lack thereof—between him and Penix. Though Mooney missed significant training time, Penix is optimistic about their connection.

“I don’t think so,” Penix expressed regarding any concerns about their timing. “I feel like we had a good offseason and I feel like our offseason was good enough to where those couple of weeks that he [Darnell Mooney] did miss, we weren’t a step behind. I felt good about where we were, so I wouldn’t put it on that.”

Deep Passing Woes

The Falcons’ struggles extend beyond Mooney’s individual performance. As a team, they have been lacking in the deep passing department, ranking last in the league with a mere 4% deep passing rate, per Pro Football Focus. Penix has completed just one of 17 attempts of 15 yards or more, with an interception marring his deep-ball efforts this season.

After a promising end to the previous season, expectations for this year’s offense have been high. Fans and analysts alike anticipated that the Falcons would quickly find their rhythm and exploit defenses more effectively. However, the slow start has left many wondering whether the offensive unit can find the extra gear needed to compete.

As the season unfolds, the spotlight remains firmly on Darnell Mooney and his ability to contribute to the Falcons’ deep passing game. The team hopes that as he continues to regain his form, Atlanta’s offensive potential can finally be unleashed.
