Angels eye former stars for managerial role as Pujols and Hunter emerge as top contenders

Angels Eye Former Stars for Managerial Role

The Los Angeles Angels are currently exploring their options for a managerial position, with several former major leaguers emerging as top contenders. As speculation mounts over the future of Ron Washington, four notable names have surfaced, hinting at a potential shift in the team’s leadership.

Pujols’ Return to the Dugout

One name that stands out is Albert Pujols, a revered figure in Angels history. After a stellar playing career, Pujols has taken his first steps into management, having recently led a team in the Dominican Winter League. Though he is currently serving the Angels as a special assistant under a long-term personal services contract, his success on the managerial front has sparked interest. Pujols embodies the passion and experience that could guide a young team, making him a compelling candidate if the Angels decide to move on from Washington.

Young’s Southern California Roots

Another candidate is Michael Young, a former infielder known for his contributions to the Texas Rangers during their successful run under Washington. Hailing from Southern California, Young has been mentioned as a possible successor to Texas manager Bruce Bochy. Despite having opportunities to take on a more prominent role, Young has prioritized family commitments but did make an appearance as a manager at the All-Star Futures Game in 2024. His local ties and understanding of the game could make him a valuable asset for the Angels.

Hunter’s Aspirations

Torii Hunter, a beloved Angels outfielder, has expressed a clear desire to transition into a managerial role. Currently working as a special assistant to the general manager, Hunter’s experience includes a stint as a baseball operations assistant with the Minnesota Twins. His outspoken ambition and familiarity with the Angels’ culture position him as a strong contender should the organization seek a new direction.

Erstad’s Coaching Experience

Darin Erstad, another former Angel, brings coaching experience from his eight seasons leading the University of Nebraska baseball team. Although he stepped down in 2019, Erstad has remained connected to the sport, balancing family commitments with a deep-seated love for baseball. His insights and experience could contribute significantly to the Angels’ future, should the team consider him for the managerial role.

Montgomery’s Interim Status

While not prominently featured in recent discussions, Ray Montgomery’s interim status could also be evaluated as the season wraps up. Since taking over for Washington, the Angels have struggled, posting a 35-49 record. His candidacy may hinge on the team’s performance in the closing months of the season. The Angels still hold a team option on Washington’s contract for next year, making any decisions about the managerial role somewhat premature.

As the Angels navigate this pivotal moment, the focus will be on how they can leverage their former stars’ experience and knowledge to foster a competitive environment moving forward. With a mix of youth and potential leadership, the future of the Angels is filled with possibilities.
