Jack Roslovic waits as NHL teams pass on $3.5M deals, leaving Canadiens to ponder center depth boost

Date:

Jack Roslovic’s Free Agency Dilemma

In the world of unrestricted free agency in the NHL, timing is everything. As many players know, the initial days can set the tone for negotiations, and for Jack Roslovic, this has become a stark reality. The 28-year-old center, who signed his first UFA contract last summer with the Carolina Hurricanes for a modest $2.8 million, expected to secure a more lucrative deal this time around. After a season that saw him tie his career high with 22 goals and dominate faceoffs at a 54.1 percent success rate, he anticipated that his performance would translate into better offers.

However, the market has proven to be less than favorable.

Underwhelming Offers Amid Rising Expectations

As free agency opened in July, Roslovic’s camp expected to see offers reflecting his improved play and the NHL’s rising salary cap. Instead, the early proposals were limited to modest two- or three-year deals, hovering between $3.5 million and $3.75 million annually. According to insights from The Athletic, the situation has left Roslovic and his representatives scratching their heads.

“The money got spent on other players,” explained a source familiar with the market dynamics. As the days dragged on, the available leverage for Roslovic diminished, a cautionary tale for many players who find themselves waiting too long. “After those first couple of days, it gets quiet, and the money generally speaking goes down,” the source added, highlighting the urgency many players feel to sign early.

Potential Fit for the Montreal Canadiens

This stalled market presents a potential opportunity for teams looking to bolster their center depth, with the Montreal Canadiens emerging as a prime candidate. Entering the season, the Canadiens face concerns about their secondary scoring, particularly at the center position. While there is optimism surrounding Kirby Dach’s development, the team’s options beyond him—such as Alex Newhook, Jake Evans, and Joe Veleno—raise questions about their playoff viability.

The Canadiens are actively seeking a second-line center, and Roslovic’s name has surfaced in discussions. “Montreal is a team that’s talked about looking for a center,” noted an NHL insider. Given the general uncertainty surrounding center depth across the league, Roslovic could provide the skill set the Canadiens are in search of.

A Critical Time for Roslovic

With the calendar moving deeper into summer, the stakes are high for Roslovic. He recently switched agents in hopes of revitalizing his market presence, as teams typically make their final roster adjustments before the season begins. The Canadiens, keen on enhancing their center position, could view Roslovic as an advantageous addition—a player who not only brings scoring potential but also experience in high-stakes games.

As the NHL landscape shifts and teams finalize their rosters, the question remains: will Jack Roslovic find a home that meets his expectations, or will he have to settle for less than he anticipated? The clock is ticking, and in the world of professional sports, opportunities can vanish quicker than they appear.
