Matt Olson Channels Chipper Jones in Historic Braves Season

Olson Joins an Exclusive Club

In a season that has left the Atlanta Braves longing for October, first baseman Matt Olson has emerged as a beacon of hope, etching his name alongside one of the franchise’s most revered legends, Chipper Jones. With the Braves missing the playoffs for the first time since 2017, Olson’s individual achievements stand in stark contrast to the team’s overall disappointment.

On Monday, Olson reached a remarkable milestone that hadn’t been accomplished by a Brave since Jones in 1999. He became the second player in franchise history to record at least 25 home runs, 40 doubles, 90 RBIs, and 90 walks in a single season. His impressive stats for the year include 28 home runs, 40 doubles, 93 RBIs, and 90 walks, placing him in a rarefied air that showcases his offensive prowess.

Consistency Amidst Challenges

Despite the Braves’ struggles, Olson has proven to be a consistent performer, narrowly missing this exclusive milestone last season due to falling short in the walks category. His recent performance earned him the National League Player of the Week honors, during which he batted .400 over seven games, with three home runs and 10 RBIs. This strong showing coincided with a key stretch in which the Braves rattled off a 10-game winning streak.

Recognized as the Braves’ MVP by MLB.com, Olson’s contributions extend beyond mere statistics. His exceptional play has solidified his reputation as one of the elite players not only on the Braves but also in the entire league. As of now, he boasts the 11th-best on-base plus slugging (OPS) in the National League, further underscoring his value to the team.

All-Star Recognition and Nostalgia

Olson’s journey this season has been marked by significant accolades, including his selection to the All-Star Game for the third time. He participated as a reserve, delighting in the opportunity to showcase his skills in front of a home crowd during the festivities held in Atlanta. His participation in the Home Run Derby, stepping in for Ronald Acuña Jr., brought a nostalgic moment for Olson, who fondly recalls attending the event as a child in 2000.

A Bright Future Ahead

With four years remaining on his contract, which runs through 2029, and a $20 million option for 2030, Olson is poised to remain a crucial element of the Braves’ lineup. His commitment to the game, highlighted by an impressive Iron Man streak, ensures that he will be a dependable presence on the field, regardless of the team’s ups and downs.

As the Braves navigate a tumultuous season, they can take solace in knowing they have a proven performer like Olson anchoring their roster. His remarkable achievements and unwavering dedication serve as a reminder that even in challenging times, there are glimmers of excellence to celebrate.
