Dodgers’ playoff hopes hinge on Shohei Ohtani’s brilliance and bullpen woes as magic number narrows to three

Date:

Dodgers’ Playoff Prospects Rest on Ohtani’s Brilliance and Bullpen Struggles

The Los Angeles Dodgers find themselves at a crossroads as they gear up for the MLB playoffs. With a magic number of just three to clinch the NL West, they have already secured their postseason berth. However, the path forward is fraught with uncertainty, particularly regarding the performance of their bullpen.

Starting Rotation Shines

On a positive note, the Dodgers’ starting rotation has been nothing short of outstanding. Shohei Ohtani, Blake Snell, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, and Tyler Glasnow are all hitting their stride as they head into the playoffs. Ohtani, in particular, has made a remarkable impact since joining the rotation in July. His 2.87 ERA over 47 innings, complemented by 62 strikeouts, speaks volumes about his effectiveness on the mound. Notably, he has not allowed an earned run in his last three starts, showcasing his ability to dominate hitters.

Bullpen Woes Emerge

Conversely, the Dodgers’ bullpen has been a significant concern. Late-inning meltdowns and blown saves have plagued the team, particularly from Tanner Scott and Blake Treinen. Both relievers, who were signed to multi-year contracts this offseason, have struggled mightily, posting ERAs above 4.50 and failing to deliver when it matters most. This inconsistency in the bullpen casts a shadow over the otherwise stellar performances of the starting rotation and raises questions about the team’s ability to hold leads in critical moments.

Ohtani’s Role in the Postseason

As the Dodgers look ahead, the timing of Ohtani’s starts will be pivotal. The final seeding will determine when he takes the mound in the postseason. If Los Angeles clinches the division, they will host a Wild Card series against the team that secures the final Wild Card spot. The prevailing sentiment is that Ohtani will likely pitch in either game one or two of that series, with the second game possibly being the more strategic choice. This would allow him an extra recovery day before facing opponents.

The Road Ahead

The central question remains: Can the Dodgers rely on their bullpen to support their starters when the stakes are highest? The performance of Scott and Treinen will be under scrutiny as the playoffs approach. The Dodgers must address these concerns swiftly to bolster their chances for a deep postseason run. The brilliance of Ohtani is undeniable, but without reliable relief support, the team’s playoff aspirations may hang in the balance.
