A.J. Brown’s Journey: From Struggle to Advocacy for Mental Health

Eagles wide receiver A.J. Brown is known for his remarkable talent on the field, but his journey has been far from smooth. The Super Bowl champion has bravely opened up about his mental health challenges, particularly a significant low point he faced in 2020. Since then, he has made it his mission to share his experiences in hopes of encouraging others to seek help and prioritize their mental well-being.

Facing the Darkness

Brown’s vulnerability about his mental health has resonated deeply with many. In 2021, during his time with the Tennessee Titans, he took to social media to reveal his struggles with depression and suicidal thoughts he experienced in 2020. At just 24 years old, he found himself in a dark place, feeling overwhelmed and unsure of how to seek help.

“I posted the video because I wanted to encourage others to seek help whenever they are down,” Brown shared. “I didn’t take into consideration what depression really was. I grew up just brushing off my feelings, and this got the best of me. I just wanted to put out a positive message that I’m still here, I’m growing, I’m blessed and have a lot to be thankful for.”

Breaking the Stigma

For Brown, addressing mental health is as crucial as focusing on physical health. He emphasizes the importance of seeking assistance when needed, especially for men, who may often feel societal pressure to suppress their emotions.

“Us as men, our feelings aren’t too much cared about,” he explained. “Get things off your chest. It’s OK to talk to someone. Seek help. You have to take care of your brain just like you take care of your body.”

Continued Advocacy

At Super Bowl LIX media day, Brown reiterated his commitment to mental health advocacy. He urged others to speak out when they are struggling, reminding them that they are not alone in their battles.

“Don’t be afraid to talk to somebody, don’t be afraid to seek help,” he stated. “Somebody was there for me and ultimately saved my life.”

Brown’s courageous journey from despair to hope serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of mental health awareness. His story encourages others to prioritize their well-being and seek the support they need, reinforcing that it’s okay to ask for help.
