Yankees jazz up offseason plans with potential $140M extension for Chisholm to power their future lineup

Yankees eye significant extension for Chisholm to bolster lineup

The New York Yankees have faced their share of challenges this season, yet amidst the fluctuations, a silver lining shines brightly. The team boasts several players who are enjoying remarkable offensive performances. While Aaron Judge continues to be a standout, two other Yankees—Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Trent Grisham—have each launched over 30 home runs this year, with Cody Bellinger closely trailing with 29. These left-handed power hitters are making the most of the favorable dimensions at Yankee Stadium, particularly that enticing short right-field porch.

Chisholm’s breakout season in pinstripes

In his inaugural season with the Yankees, Jazz Chisholm has not only showcased his power but has also demonstrated his versatility on the base paths, achieving a commendable 30 home runs and 30 stolen bases. This impressive performance has sparked discussions about a potential contract extension that could secure him a long-term future in the Bronx.

Chisholm, who is not set to hit free agency this year, still has a couple of arbitration years ahead of him. He is poised to significantly increase his earnings from the $5.85 million he earned this season, especially considering the likelihood of a successful hearing this winter.

Potential extension figures

Speculation around a possible extension for Chisholm suggests a figure that could place him among the highest-paid second basemen in the league. Athlon Sports’ Kristie Ackert provides insight into what such an extension might entail: “A reasonable extension now probably falls in the seven-year, $140–170 million range, buying out his last two arbitration years and carrying him through his 20s.” This would translate to an annual salary of $20–24 million, a figure that reflects both his injury history and his substantial impact on the field.

Alternatively, the Yankees might consider a shorter deal—possibly five years for $100-120 million—still ensuring that Chisholm secures a nine-figure contract. The decision will likely hinge on the organization’s strategy regarding other impending free agents, including Trent Grisham, Devin Williams, and Luke Weaver.

Yankees’ commitment to competitiveness

One thing remains clear: the Yankees are not shy about opening their wallets during the offseason to maintain their competitive edge. With Jazz Chisholm currently hitting .242 over 124 games, complemented by his 31 home runs and an OPS+ of 126, the organization recognizes the value he brings to their lineup. His selection to the All-Star team earlier this summer, coupled with a bWAR of 4.0, only further solidifies his position as a key player moving forward.

As the Yankees look to the future, securing Chisholm’s talents with a substantial extension could be the catalyst they need to enhance their lineup and remain formidable contenders in the league.
