Commanders bolster defense by signing Darnell Savage

The Washington Commanders are making a strategic move to strengthen their defense following the season-ending injury of Will Harris. With Harris sidelined due to a fractured fibula, the team has signed former first-round pick Darnell Savage, who was recently released by the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Head Coach’s Insights on Savage

Commanders head coach Dan Quinn addressed the situation, acknowledging the significant impact of losing Harris. He highlighted Harris’s unique skill set and versatility, particularly his background as a cornerback.

Quinn remarked, “I feel the speed and the coverage ability from Will, that’s one thing. This is a position that we’ve got some really talented guys with [S Tyler] Owens, [S Jeremy] Reaves, and [S Percy] Butler who have had a go, and so adding Savage into that group, we’ll see as we move forward.”

He expressed enthusiasm about Savage’s addition, noting, “We’re very excited to have him here. It’s a deep position for us, but Will has a very unique skill set. His background at corner certainly helps, but yeah, he’s been an excellent addition for us.”

Savage’s Role and Expectations

With the Commanders looking to maintain their momentum this season, Savage’s presence is expected to be pivotal. While the team will likely replace Harris by committee, Savage’s experience and skill set should provide a substantial boost.

Quinn emphasized that it may take some time for Savage to fully acclimate to the team’s defensive schemes, but with the season still in its early stages, he has the opportunity to adjust before the games begin to hold higher stakes.

Savage could potentially make his debut with the Commanders during their Week 4 matchup against the Atlanta Falcons, scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m. ET. As the Commanders navigate the challenges ahead, Savage’s integration into the squad will be closely watched as they aim to reinforce their defensive lineup.
