Commanders eye daring move as Darnell Savage seeks redemption in potential signing after Jaguars release

Commanders Pursue Darnell Savage Following Safety Injury

The Washington Commanders are navigating a challenging situation after losing safety Will Harris for the foreseeable future. Harris sustained a broken fibula during the Week 3 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders, casting doubt on his ability to return this season.

Savage’s Opportunity in Washington

In light of Harris’s injury, the Commanders are exploring potential solutions at the safety position. On Monday, the team is scheduled to meet with Darnell Savage, a former first-round pick of the Green Bay Packers. Reports from ESPN indicate that if the meeting yields positive results, Savage may soon find himself donning the burgundy and gold.

Savage’s journey has seen him spend the first five years of his career with the Packers, where he established himself as a reliable safety. However, his recent stint with the Jacksonville Jaguars has been less than stellar. After signing a three-year, $21.7 million deal with the Jaguars in 2024, Savage struggled to make a significant impact. He entered training camp without a starting position and ultimately became the team’s third safety, leading to his unexpected release last week.

Savage’s Track Record

Despite the recent setbacks, Savage brings a wealth of experience to the table. Over the course of 87 career games, he has made 82 starts and accumulated impressive statistics, including 354 tackles, 10 interceptions, and 38 passes defended. His versatility allows him to excel in various roles, whether playing close to the line of scrimmage, covering the slot, or patrolling the deep secondary.

With the season still in its early stages, the Commanders are in a position where they could benefit significantly from Savage’s talents. The team is looking to rebound from Harris’s absence and bolster their defensive unit, making this potential signing a critical move for their campaign.

NFL News Roundup

In other NFL news, the Colts achieved a feat not seen since at least 1940. Tensions flared during a sideline exchange between Andy Reid and Travis Kelce, while CeeDee Lamb provided an update on his status for Week 4 after dealing with an ankle injury. George Pickens experienced a sideline meltdown following a costly mistake in the game against the Bears, and Kevin Stefanski made a pivotal decision regarding the Browns’ starting quarterback after Week 3. The league continues to deliver drama, with a wild finish between the Rams and Eagles featuring an unlikely big-man touchdown and a disappointing outcome for bettors.
