Browns consider trading veteran Njoku as 0-2 start and looming 2026 free agency make him prime target for Chiefs or 49ers

Browns face tough choices as 0-2 start raises trade speculation for David Njoku

The Cleveland Browns have stumbled out of the gate this season, starting with an uninspiring 0-2 record. This lackluster performance, which many anticipated, has already raised questions about the team’s direction. As the possibility of a disappointing season looms, the Browns may find themselves in a position to sell at the upcoming NFL trade deadline. One player who could be on the move is veteran tight end David Njoku.

Njoku’s contract situation adds urgency

At 29 years old, Njoku is in the final year of his contract and is likely eyeing new opportunities as he approaches free agency in 2026. After nearly a decade in Cleveland, marked by a series of struggles, it may be time for both the player and franchise to part ways. To avoid losing Njoku without compensation, the Browns should consider trading him to the highest bidder.

Analyst Kristopher Knox has pointed out that both the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers could emerge as potential suitors for the tight end. Njoku, while not a perennial Pro Bowler, offers a level of experience and playmaking ability that many teams covet at the tight end position. Given his skill set, he could fetch a notable return in a trade, which is particularly important as the Browns evaluate their future.

Potential trade value and impact

Knox estimates that a conditional third-round pick could secure Njoku’s services. However, given his impending free agency, it’s unclear if the Browns would receive that level of compensation. Should the team’s young quarterbacks, Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders, struggle to establish themselves as long-term solutions, the Browns may need to look towards the 2026 draft for a new franchise quarterback.

Njoku’s departure could also pave the way for rookie Harold Fannin Jr. to take on a larger role. Fannin has shown promise early in the season, recording 12 receptions for 111 yards, albeit without a touchdown. The Browns may wish to capitalize on his development by allowing him more opportunities on the field.

Factors influencing the decision to trade Njoku

One factor that could influence the Browns’ decision to retain Njoku is the development of their young quarterbacks. A reliable tight end can be a crucial asset as they navigate their first seasons as starters. Njoku’s experience could provide valuable support in this transition.

As for the interest from the Chiefs and 49ers, San Francisco’s pursuit of Njoku may hinge on the health of George Kittle, who is currently on injured reserve until at least Week 5. If Kittle’s recovery takes longer than anticipated, the 49ers could indeed make a play for Njoku. Meanwhile, the Chiefs are in need of additional pass-catching options. However, with Travis Kelce and other tight ends like Noah Gray and Robert Tonyan already on the roster, it remains uncertain whether Kansas City would prioritize adding yet another tight end.

As the trade deadline approaches, the Browns must weigh their options carefully. Whether they choose to embrace a rebuilding phase or hold onto Njoku remains to be seen, but the stakes are undeniably high as they look to reverse their early-season struggles.
