Detroit Lions eye Jaelan Phillips as potential trade target to bolster defensive edge with available $31M cap space

Lions Set Sights on Jaelan Phillips as Trade Deadline Approaches

The Detroit Lions are eyeing potential reinforcements for their defensive line as the NFL trade deadline approaches. With the team currently navigating a precarious situation at the defensive end position, the Lions may find themselves targeting Miami Dolphins linebacker Jaelan Phillips as a solution.

Defensive Depth Concerns

Aidan Hutchinson, the standout rookie from last season, has quickly established himself as a cornerstone of the Lions’ defense. However, concerns have emerged regarding the health of Marcus Davenport, who has been spotted in the locker room wearing a sling. As the Lions prepare for the challenges ahead, they are reminded of the difficulties they faced last season when injuries plagued their pass-rush. The team responded then by acquiring veteran Za’Darius Smith, but ultimately parted ways with him as he signed with the Philadelphia Eagles.

With Davenport’s long-term status remaining uncertain, the Lions may once again be compelled to seek additional EDGE help as they approach the November trade deadline.

Capitalizing on Cap Space

Fortunately for Detroit, they are in a favorable financial position. They currently boast over $31 million in effective cap space, ranking second in the league in this regard, according to OverTheCap. This substantial financial flexibility provides the Lions with the ability to pursue a higher-priced short-term option if general manager Brad Holmes decides to make a move.

Jaelan Phillips: A Target Worth Considering

A name that has emerged on the Lions’ radar is Jaelan Phillips of the Miami Dolphins. Now in the final year of his rookie contract, Phillips is playing on the fifth-year option, which makes him an intriguing potential acquisition. Following a disheartening 31-21 loss to the Buffalo Bills, the Dolphins find themselves struggling at 0-3. This predicament could prompt the team to consider trading some of their assets in exchange for draft capital.

In a recent analysis, a prominent NFL insider highlighted Phillips as a player to watch leading up to the trade deadline. While Phillips has faced challenges with injuries—playing only 12 games over the past two seasons—he still managed to accumulate 15.5 sacks in his first two years. His current statistics show nine combined tackles without a sack through three games this season, but his athleticism and power remain undeniable.

Fit with the Lions’ Scheme

Phillips could provide the depth the Lions need, and his contract would be manageable on a prorated basis. Under Brad Holmes’ leadership, the Lions have been strategic in their acquisitions, focusing on players who align with both the team’s schematic requirements and cultural values. This philosophy has been pivotal in their rise to the top of the NFC North.

However, several factors will weigh on the Lions’ decision-making process concerning Phillips. If Davenport’s injury is deemed non-serious, the urgency to trade may diminish. Additionally, Josh Paschal’s anticipated return from the Non-Football Injury list could further alter the team’s approach, although Paschal does not present the same pass-rushing threat.

Navigating Trade Dynamics

The injury history associated with Phillips, combined with the fact that he would essentially be a one-year rental, suggests the Lions might not need to part with high-level draft capital. A potential trade could involve a day-three pick or perhaps a package featuring one or both of their sixth-round selections.

While Phillips may not deliver the same immediate impact as elite talents like Micah Parsons, he could serve as a complementary force alongside Hutchinson, providing the Lions with much-needed depth and versatility on their defensive edge.

As the Lions weigh their options in the coming weeks, the opportunity to secure a rental player like Phillips could prove to be a savvy move at the trade deadline.
