Knicks face pivotal decision: trade Miles McBride now or risk costly future contract amid crowded guard lineup

Knicks Face Pivotal Decision on Miles McBride

New York Knicks guard Miles McBride stands at a crossroads as he enters his second season under a three-year deal. The young player, who has shown promise, may find his days with the Knicks numbered as the team evaluates its crowded backcourt.

Current Contract Situation

McBride is set to earn $4.3 million this season, followed by just under $4 million in the final year of his contract. While his current salary is manageable, the Knicks must consider the implications of his future earnings. Clutch Points analyst Drew Maresca suggests that McBride may soon find himself on the trading block.

“New York will own McBride’s full bird rights in 2027,” Maresca noted. “So they can technically match any offers he receives then, unlike the Isaiah Hartenstein fiasco. But will they want to pay more than $10 million annually plus luxury tax penalties for a role player?”

A Crowded Backcourt

The Knicks’ depth at guard complicates McBride’s situation. With established players like Jordan Clarkson and potential contributions from veterans Landry Shamet and Malcolm Brogdon, McBride may struggle to find consistent minutes. Despite his effectiveness in his role, the Knicks face the reality of needing to make tough decisions regarding their roster.

Moving McBride could allow the Knicks to retain Shamet and Brogdon, both of whom possess contracts that afford the team flexibility as they navigate the upcoming training camp.

Timing of a Potential Trade

While speculation about a McBride trade looms, it’s unlikely that action will come before the season begins. The Knicks have a history of making bold moves, as evidenced by last season’s acquisition of Karl-Anthony Towns. However, McBride’s value—especially at his current salary—makes him a valuable asset to retain.

The window for a potential trade becomes more pressing as McBride approaches the final year of his contract. The Knicks must weigh the benefits of maximizing his value now against the risk of losing him to a significant pay increase if he continues to develop into a more impactful player.

Future Considerations

McBride’s growth trajectory suggests that he could command a sizable salary surpassing his current earnings. The Knicks must decide whether to invest in his future or trade him for assets that could better align with their strategic goals. As the team delves deeper into training camp, the decision regarding McBride will undoubtedly shape the Knicks’ roster and financial landscape moving forward.

The Knicks find themselves at a crucial juncture with McBride. Balancing the potential for his development against the realities of their current roster will be key in determining the team’s direction as they aim for success in the upcoming season.
