J.J. McCarthy battles ankle sprain in walking boot as Vikings gamble on Carson Wentz’s leadership

J.J. McCarthy’s Ankle Sprain and the Vikings’ Leadership Gamble

J.J. McCarthy remains in a walking boot as a precautionary measure following a sprained ankle he sustained during last Sunday’s clash against the Atlanta Falcons. The Minnesota Vikings have yet to disclose a specific timetable for his recovery, but they have indicated they do not plan to place him on injured reserve.

McCarthy’s Status Ahead of Bengals Game

As the Vikings prepare for their game against the Cincinnati Bengals, McCarthy has officially been ruled out, which was anticipated. This opens the door for Carson Wentz to step into the starting role. Behind him, undrafted rookie Max Brosmer will serve as the backup, with recently signed Desmond Ridder positioned as the emergency third quarterback.

Progress in Recovery

Despite the setback, McCarthy appears to be on the mend. Head coach Kevin O’Connell reported that the young quarterback has been involved in practice, standing alongside him as plays are called into Wentz. O’Connell expressed optimism about McCarthy’s recovery, noting, “He’s progressing. He was able to be out at practice and standing right next to me as I’m calling the plays in to Carson. That’s the best development and dialogue in this particular short term that he’s going to be able to have.”

O’Connell added that McCarthy has been actively participating in meetings and asking insightful questions, demonstrating his commitment to his responsibilities during rehabilitation. The coach emphasized that they are moving past the initial phase of swelling and now monitoring McCarthy’s daily progress.

Projected Timeline for Return

Reports earlier this week suggest McCarthy could be sidelined for a span of 2 to 4 weeks. Tom Pelissero further clarified that the 22-year-old’s situation will be evaluated on a week-to-week basis. While O’Connell refrained from delving into the specifics of the injury, he confirmed that McCarthy’s use of the walking boot is merely precautionary during practice.

There is a possibility that McCarthy may not return until after the Vikings’ Week 6 bye. Following Sunday’s contest against the Bengals, the team will embark on a journey to Ireland for a Week 4 matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Dublin. They will then head to London for a Week 5 game against the Cleveland Browns, which precedes their bye week before returning home in Week 7 to face the defending champion Philadelphia Eagles.
