Robert Suarez poised for free agency stardom as Dodgers and Yankees eye All-Star closer’s talent

Robert Suarez Set to Shine in Free Agency as Dodgers and Yankees Take Notice

The San Diego Padres are bracing for a pivotal offseason, with relief pitcher Robert Suarez emerging as one of the most coveted free agents on the market. As the regular season winds down, the Padres find themselves just 2.5 games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League West standings, a positioning that highlights both the team’s strengths and weaknesses.

A Bullpen Struggling in September

The Padres’ recent surge has been buoyed by their powerful starting rotation, yet the same cannot be said for the Dodgers’ bullpen, which has faltered significantly. Following a tie game collapse against the Philadelphia Phillies, the Dodgers’ relief corps has limped to a disappointing 3-12 record with a 4.50 ERA since the August 1 trade deadline. This downturn signals trouble as the Dodgers prepare for another offseason focused on bolstering their relief pitching.

In their quest for a reliable closer, Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman may turn his gaze toward a familiar source: the Padres. Jon Heyman has identified both the Dodgers and the New York Yankees as likely suitors for Suarez, who is set to enter free agency after the World Series. The prevailing sentiment suggests Suarez will opt out of his $8 million contract for 2026, seeking a more lucrative deal on the open market.

Suarez’s All-Star Credentials

This season, Suarez has established himself as a premier closer, leading the National League with 38 saves while maintaining an impressive 3.06 ERA and 0.928 WHIP over 65 appearances. His selection to the NL All-Star team for the second consecutive year underscores his value and performance level, making him one of the most sought-after closers this offseason.

The Padres’ recent acquisition of Mason Miller from the Oakland Athletics further complicates Suarez’s future with the team. With Miller poised to take over in high-leverage situations, the Padres have likely resigned themselves to the reality that they will not be able to retain Suarez, who has become a standout player.

Market Value and Future Prospects

As teams begin to assess their offseason needs, Suarez’s potential market value is already generating discussion. The four-year, $72 million contract signed by former Padres pitcher Tanner Scott with the Dodgers serves as a benchmark for Suarez’s potential earnings. While Suarez is four years older than Scott was at the time of his signing, the $18 million average annual value for an All-Star closer could be within reach for Suarez as he negotiates his next deal.

The Padres possess one of the top bullpens in baseball, and investing heavily in a closer may not align with their offseason priorities. In contrast, the Dodgers and Yankees, operating in the sport’s two largest media markets, are well-equipped to find the financial resources to make a competitive offer for Suarez.

As the offseason approaches, all eyes will be on Robert Suarez, whose talent and experience are sure to command attention and possibly reshape the landscape of relief pitching in Major League Baseball.
