Desmond Watson poised for historic NFL comeback as Buccaneers reignite interest in record-breaking lineman

Desmond Watson’s Potential NFL Comeback

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are showing renewed interest in Desmond Watson, a former standout defensive tackle from Florida. According to reports, the team conducted a workout with Watson on Friday, signaling that their fascination with the imposing lineman remains intact.

Watson’s Journey and Weight Management

Watson entered the NFL Draft weighing a staggering 464 pounds. However, it’s believed he has shed some weight since then, a crucial factor that the Buccaneers have closely monitored. Although the team had not signed him to a contract as of Friday afternoon, the invitation to return for a workout indicates they are still considering his potential contributions.

After being signed following April’s draft, Watson spent the summer with the Buccaneers, but much of that time was spent on the non-football injury/illness list. This designation kept him from participating in preseason activities, a setback that hindered his chances to showcase his skills.

The Buccaneers had set specific weight milestones for Watson to achieve, indicating their commitment to conditioning him for the rigors of professional football. Reports fluctuated throughout the offseason, suggesting Watson’s weight had dropped to 450, 437, and even 429 pounds at different points. Regardless, any of these figures would still position him as the heaviest player ever to step onto the field in an NFL regular-season game.

A Second Chance on the Horizon

In the final week of August, the Buccaneers waived Watson, seemingly without him reaching the targeted weight goals set by the coaching staff. However, his recent workout invitation suggests the door remains open for a potential return, even if it may not happen immediately.

As the situation unfolds, Watson’s journey is certainly one to watch. If the pieces fall into place, he could make history as one of the most notable comeback stories in the NFL. With the right support and determination, Watson’s aspirations for a successful return to the league remain alive.
