Mohamed Sanu Steps Away from NFL, Embraces Coaching and Podcasting

After over a decade of competing at the highest level, Mohamed Sanu has made the momentous decision to retire from the NFL. The former wide receiver shared the news in an emotional social media post on Friday, marking the end of a journey that began with great promise.

“After 10+ years in the NFL, my playing chapter is closing,” Sanu expressed on X, reflecting on his time in the league and expressing gratitude to everyone who played a part in his career — from coaches to teammates and fans.

A Promising Start in Cincinnati

Sanu’s NFL journey commenced in 2012 when he was selected in the third round of the draft by the Cincinnati Bengals. During his four seasons with the team, he showcased his potential, particularly in 2014, when he recorded 56 receptions for 790 yards and five touchdowns. Over his tenure with the Bengals, he compiled a total of 152 catches, amassing 1,793 yards and 11 touchdowns, solidifying his reputation as a reliable receiver.

Thriving in Atlanta

However, it was his time with the Atlanta Falcons where Sanu truly flourished. From 2016 to 2019, he became an integral part of the Falcons’ offense, tallying 225 receptions for 2,507 yards and 14 touchdowns. His performance peaked in seasons where he registered impressive yardage totals of 838, 703, and 653 yards, contributing significantly to the team’s success during those years.

Later Career Journeys

Sanu’s journey continued as he played for several other franchises, including brief stints with the New England Patriots, San Francisco 49ers, and Detroit Lions. His last notable regular-season action occurred in 2021 with the 49ers, where he caught 15 passes for 177 yards. Although he participated in the Miami Dolphins’ 2022 preseason, he was ultimately released, marking the end of his active playing days.

A New Chapter Ahead

Now at the age of 36, Sanu is ready to transition into a new phase of his career. In his retirement announcement, he revealed plans to delve into coaching while also expanding his podcasting efforts. This shift indicates not only his desire to remain involved in the game he loves but also to share his knowledge and experience with the next generation of players.

As Sanu embarks on this new chapter, fans and former colleagues alike will undoubtedly be watching closely, eager to see how he influences the sport off the field.
