Commanders reinforce defense with substantial deal for Preston Smith

The Washington Commanders have made a strategic move to enhance their defensive lineup by re-signing edge rusher Preston Smith, a former draft pick, for a significant $77 million. This decision comes in the wake of losing Deatrich Wise to a season-ending injury, underscoring the team’s commitment to fortifying their defensive capabilities.

A Familiar Face Returns

Preston Smith, 32, rejoins the Commanders after a successful stint with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Known for his impactful presence on the field, Smith was originally selected by Washington as a second-round pick in the 2015 NFL Draft. His prior experience with the team provides a sense of continuity and familiarity as the Commanders navigate the challenges ahead.

Notably, Smith’s return is expected to provide an immediate boost to a unit that has faced difficulties in generating pressure on opposing quarterbacks. With Wise sidelined, Smith’s experience and skill set are crucial in maintaining the team’s defensive edge.

Strategic Adjustments in the Roster

In addition to the signing of Smith, the Commanders have made adjustments to their roster by placing cornerback Jonathan Jones on injured reserve. This move indicates the team’s focus on managing player health while ensuring that they have the necessary depth to compete effectively.

As Washington’s defense looks to regain its footing, the addition of Preston Smith is a pivotal step. His history with the franchise, coupled with his proven track record in the league, could serve as a catalyst for the Commanders as they aim to solidify their defensive front in the remainder of the season.
