Cubs Edge Closer to Playoff Spot with Victory Over Pirates

The Chicago Cubs took another significant step toward the postseason on Tuesday, securing a 4-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates. With this win, the Cubs continue to inch closer to clinching their first playoff berth in five seasons.

Cade Horton Shines in Rookie Performance

Cade Horton, the rookie pitcher, notched his 11th win of the season, showcasing a solid performance on the mound. Although he lasted only five innings, Horton effectively limited the Pirates to three hits and just one run, displaying his ability to handle pressure with six strikeouts and a single walk.

The Cubs’ bullpen played an essential role in the victory, as four relievers combined to one-hit the Pirates over the remaining innings. Brad Keller was called upon to seal the game, earning a save in the process.

Offensive Highlights Fuel the Win

The Cubs’ offense was sparked by Michael Busch, who launched a solo home run off Pirates starter Paul Skenes, providing an early lead for Chicago. Additionally, Pete Crow-Armstrong contributed significantly, driving in two vital runs that helped solidify the Cubs’ advantage as they chased down a playoff spot.

Magic Number Shrinks Despite Scheduling Quirk

With this victory, the Cubs improved their record to 87-64, chipping away at their magic number as the postseason looms. However, an odd scheduling quirk means that the team will have to wait at least one more game before officially clinching a playoff berth.

As the excitement builds in Chicago, the Cubs are poised to make their long-awaited return to October baseball, but they’ll need to navigate the final stretch of the regular season with precision and determination.
