Jaguars part ways with Darnell Savage, concluding $21.75M contract after rocky start to 2024 season

The Jacksonville Jaguars have made a significant move in their roster management, opting to part ways with safety Darnell Savage, a decision that marks the end of the $21.75 million contract he signed during the 2024 offseason.

The announcement came on Tuesday, with the team revealing Savage’s release but providing no details on any corresponding roster adjustments.

Savage’s Journey with the Jaguars

Savage, a former first-round selection by the Green Bay Packers, joined the Jaguars with high expectations. His three-year deal was seen as a critical addition to their defensive lineup. In his inaugural season with Jacksonville, he participated in 13 games, earning the starting role for all of them. His performance included 51 tackles, two tackles for loss, and six passes defended, showcasing his potential impact on the field.

Struggles for a Starting Position

Despite his solid statistics from his first season, Savage faced challenges securing a starting position heading into the current season. Competing with Eric Murray and Andrew Wingard, he was unable to demonstrate the consistency and reliability needed to maintain a primary role. As the team approached the early games of the season, Savage found himself relegated to a backup position.

Looking Ahead for the Jaguars

This decision to waive Savage reflects the Jaguars’ commitment to optimizing their roster as they navigate the 2024 season. With the safety market now wide open, it remains to be seen how the team will fill the void left by Savage’s departure and whether they will seek a new addition to bolster their defensive backfield.
