Matt Grzelcyk’s PTO with Blackhawks adds pressure to restricted free agent Wyatt Kaiser’s contract saga amid developmental stakes

Matt Grzelcyk’s PTO with Blackhawks raises stakes for Wyatt Kaiser’s contract negotiations

An unrestricted free agent who lingered without a firm contract throughout the summer has finally found a new opportunity, albeit under the constraints of a professional tryout. This new development, however, may have significant implications for a restricted free agent who is still awaiting resolution on his own contract situation.

Grzelcyk’s Recent Performance

Matt Grzelcyk recently signed a one-year, $2.75 million contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins for the 2024–25 season, capping off what was arguably one of the best performances of his career. Despite scoring only once, Grzelcyk managed to rack up 39 assists—a personal best—tying for the team lead with 15 power-play points alongside the legendary Sidney Crosby. At just 31 years old, the veteran left-shot defenseman had aspirations of securing a multi-year deal after such a standout season. Instead, he now finds himself competing for a spot on a Chicago Blackhawks team that has struggled in recent years.

The PTO with the Blackhawks

As reported by NHL insider Elliotte Friedman, Grzelcyk is joining the Chicago Blackhawks on a professional tryout. With training camp set to commence this week, the Blackhawks aim to fortify their youthful defensive lineup, which currently features only one player older than 24, Connor Murphy.

But his arrival raises an important question: What implications does Grzelcyk’s PTO have for 23-year-old restricted free agent Wyatt Kaiser?

Kaiser’s Ongoing Contract Negotiations

Negotiations between the Blackhawks and Kaiser, who received a qualifying offer back in June, have stalled since the middle of summer, leaving both parties in limbo. At first glance, Grzelcyk’s PTO appears to directly challenge Kaiser’s pending contract. It begs the question: if the Blackhawks are willing to bring in a veteran defenseman on a tryout, why not finalize a deal with the promising young player?

The crux of the issue may not solely revolve around salary. As highlighted by Blackhawk Up’s Greg Boysen, the delay in negotiations likely pertains more to the length of the contract rather than its financial terms. Kaiser lacks arbitration rights, which gives the Blackhawks substantial leverage in the discussions. Furthermore, Kaiser’s camp seems to be advocating for a longer-term commitment, a proposition that the team may be hesitant to endorse.

Kaiser’s Development and Potential Role

Analyzing Kaiser’s recent performance reveals a player on the rise. Last season, he participated in 57 games with the Blackhawks, tallying four goals and eight points, while also spending time with the Rockford IceHogs. Although his play may not be flashy, he is evolving into a dependable hybrid defenseman, capable of skating the puck and adapting his game—qualities that are increasingly vital for a young team focused on development.

If Kaiser and the Blackhawks cannot reach an agreement soon, he risks missing a significant portion of training camp. Analysts suggest that he possesses one of the most promising developmental trajectories among the Blackhawks’ young blueliners. Getting him on the ice early could significantly expedite his growth.

The Impact of Grzelcyk’s Presence

The addition of Grzelcyk, even on a tryout basis, complicates Kaiser’s situation by potentially diminishing his ice time and introducing a seasoned presence to a developing team. This could undermine Kaiser’s negotiating power and alter his career trajectory.

It’s a precarious balancing act for the Blackhawks. If they use Kaiser as leverage in negotiations or opt for a short-term arrangement with Grzelcyk mentoring the younger players, it could hinder Kaiser’s development or even lead to a potential trade. Conversely, if Kaiser secures a contract in the near future, he could solidify his role as a key transitioning defender who can skate, move the puck, and learn from more experienced players—possibly even earning a top-four position in the upcoming season.

As time ticks away, the Grzelcyk signing shifts the pressure back onto Kaiser’s camp, making the urgency for a decision increasingly palpable.
