Boswell’s Clutch Kick Ignites Contract Extension Discussion

In a thrilling opening week for the Pittsburgh Steelers, kicker Chris Boswell once again showcased his importance to the team, delivering a game-winning 60-yard field goal against the New York Jets. The Steelers found themselves trailing 32-31 with just under a minute left on the clock, but Boswell stepped up, executing a kick that would seal the victory and remind everyone of his value.

A Call for Recognition

Boswell’s heroics naturally reignited conversations about his contract status. Despite his proven track record, Boswell had not secured a contract extension during the offseason, with the Steelers seemingly content to allow his current deal to run through 2026. This decision has drawn attention from former Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, who made it clear that Boswell’s performance warrants a reevaluation.

On his podcast, Roethlisberger urged the franchise to act swiftly, saying, “Pay the man.” He emphasized that locking in Boswell now would be a financially prudent move, suggesting that it would be cheaper than waiting until the end of the season. “But Bos, we love you, great job,” he concluded, highlighting the respect and admiration Boswell has earned.

A Legacy of Excellence

While Boswell has faced his share of challenges over the years, his overall performance has far outweighed the negatives. The two-time Pro Bowler has consistently maintained a field goal success rate of 90% or higher in seven of his ten seasons with the Steelers. His ability to convert under pressure became particularly vital during the 2024 season, where he led the NFL in made field goals, often rescuing stalled drives and giving the Steelers crucial points.

Roethlisberger shared insights on the comfort that comes from having a reliable kicker, stating, “The two things that you have that give you so much comfort in a football game is a great defense… and a great kicker.” This sentiment encapsulates the essence of Boswell’s role within the team.

The Financial Landscape

Currently, Boswell’s average annual salary of $5 million places him tenth among NFL kickers. However, many analysts argue that his contributions place him well above that ranking. With his track record and the critical role he plays, it is expected that Boswell will receive a well-deserved raise when the opportunity arises.

As discussions about his future continue, Boswell remains a pivotal figure for the Steelers, embodying the reliability and skill that teams rely on in high-stakes moments.
