Cowboys weigh Clowney’s true value as contract talks stall despite cap space and Jerry Jones’s willingness to spend

Cowboys Assess Jadeveon Clowney’s Worth as Contract Negotiations Stumble

The Dallas Cowboys extended an invitation to free agent edge rusher Jadeveon Clowney this week, welcoming him to the Star, but he departed without securing a contract. The visit raised questions about why a team with ample cap space and a willingness to spend is hesitating to finalize a deal.

Jerry Jones Opens the Wallet

Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones recently made waves when he expressed his readiness to invest in top-tier talent following the team’s strategic trade of Micah Parsons. This trade not only cleared significant cap space but also positioned the Cowboys as potential players in the free agent market.

However, while financial resources are readily available, Jones remains astute about value. This principle appears to be the crux of the holdup in negotiations with Clowney.

Value Discrepancy Hinders Agreement

According to Cowboys insider Ed Werder, the negotiations have stalled over differing perceptions of Clowney’s worth. The Cowboys have shown interest in Clowney, but convincing him to commit seems to be a challenge. Werder noted on social media, “The Cowboys want Clowney. They’re attempting to persuade him to want them. Seems like difference in determining his value. Got paid big by Panthers last season.”

Clowney, once the first overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft by the Houston Texans, played for the Carolina Panthers in the 2024 season. Despite the Panthers signing him to a two-year contract, they released him in May, making him available for any interested team.

The Cowboys, however, are reportedly reluctant to offer a contract that approaches the $20 million he earned last season.

Team Efforts to Recruit Clowney

To enhance their chances, the Cowboys’ coaching staff is actively seeking to recruit Clowney. Offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer made a personal call to Clowney on Thursday, engaging him in conversation while Clowney prepared dinner at home. The call included discussions with Clowney’s family, illustrating the team’s commitment to making him feel welcomed.

Last season, Clowney had a productive year, accumulating 46 tackles, 5.5 sacks, and 7.5 tackles for loss over 14 games. His performance underscores why the Cowboys are interested in his services.

As the Cowboys prepare for their upcoming matchups, including a notable clash against the New York Giants, the outcome of these negotiations with Clowney remains uncertain. With the clock ticking, it will be intriguing to see if the team can bridge the gap in valuation and secure this seasoned edge rusher to bolster their defense.
