Cardinals’ Masyn Winn sidelined for season as meniscus woes halt Gold Glove pursuit; Saggese steps in for shortstop duties

Date:

Winn’s Season Cut Short by Meniscus Injury

The St. Louis Cardinals delivered disappointing news regarding their promising shortstop, Masyn Winn, late Friday evening. As reported, Winn will miss the remainder of the season due to complications from a meniscus tear that has hindered his recovery efforts. This decision follows a series of lineup scratches as the young player attempted to push through the injury over recent weeks.

Saggese Steps Up

With Winn sidelined, Thomas Saggese will assume the majority of shortstop responsibilities for the rest of the year. Saggese has had a solid season himself, boasting a .251 batting average, one home run, and a .618 OPS. However, he will have big shoes to fill, as Winn was not only a key player in the lineup but also shined defensively.

Winn’s Impressive Defensive Metrics

Winn had been having a standout season before his injury, finishing with a .253 average, nine home runs, and a .673 OPS. His defensive prowess was particularly noteworthy, as he recorded a league-leading 22 outs above average at shortstop, according to FanGraphs, along with a 17 Fielding Run Value rating. These numbers positioned him as a strong candidate for the National League Gold Glove award, highlighting his exceptional skills in the field.

Future Outlook for Winn

The Cardinals, currently sitting at 72-76 and effectively out of postseason contention, will now look to Saggese to maintain stability at shortstop. In addition to the season-ending news, Winn will undergo arthroscopic surgery soon to address the damage to his meniscus. Despite the setback, the team is optimistic about his recovery and expects him to be ready for the start of the 2026 season.
