Eagles Adjusting to Injuries Against Chiefs with Calcaterra Stepping Up
The Philadelphia Eagles are facing a significant challenge as they prepare for their Week 2 matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs. With starting tight end Dallas Goedert sidelined due to a knee sprain, Grant Calcaterra is poised to step into the spotlight once again. This isn’t new territory for Calcaterra, who has previously filled in for Goedert during his recent injury struggles.
In addition to Goedert, the Eagles have ruled out running back Will Shipley, who is dealing with an oblique injury, and rookie offensive lineman Cameron Williams, who has a shoulder issue. However, there is a silver lining: backup quarterback Tanner McKee is listed as questionable with a right thumb injury, while left guard Landon Dickerson and outside rusher Jalyx Hunt have fully participated in practice.
Calcaterra’s Growing Confidence
Calcaterra’s journey in the NFL has been one of steady growth and adaptation. Last season, he started 13 games when Goedert was unable to play, and he has learned to leverage that experience. “I feel like over the last few years, I’ve had the opportunity to play more snaps when Dallas has been out,” Calcaterra reflected. “Every year, I just feel more and more comfortable. I take a huge leap in my comfort level on the field, especially in recognizing defenses and reacting quickly.”
His ability to step in effectively is crucial, as the Eagles have maintained a strong record without Goedert, going 13-2 since 2022 when he is absent. Calcaterra is aware that these opportunities are not just about winning games but also about making a case for his future contract. “I don’t think there are a ton of tight ends who are just mauling guys,” he stated. “I feel like I do a great job with my run blocking, and I’m always pushing myself to improve.”
The Ripple Effect of Injuries
With Calcaterra stepping into the starting role, Kylen Granson is likely to take over as the No. 2 tight end. Granson, who joined the Eagles this offseason after spending time with the Colts, brings valuable experience with 13 starts over the past two seasons. He recognizes the importance of learning from his peers, stating, “I’ve picked up quite a few different things from my different mentors. This game is all about picking up tips and tricks and filling out your arsenal.”
The team may also elevate one of their practice squad tight ends, either E.J. Jenkins or Cam Latu, to add depth to the position.
Running Back Situation
In the backfield, the absence of Shipley could be mitigated by the recent acquisition of Tank Bigsby. The Eagles traded for the running back, who is prepared to contribute as a second or third option behind A.J. Dillon and Saquon Barkley. “If Coach tells me it’s time to go, I’m gonna go,” Bigsby asserted. His readiness to step in reflects the Eagles’ depth and adaptability as they navigate these injuries.
As the Eagles gear up for their clash with the Chiefs, the focus will not only be on filling gaps left by injured players but also on maintaining the team’s competitive edge. With players like Calcaterra and Bigsby stepping into larger roles, Philadelphia aims to keep their momentum going against a formidable opponent.
