Tigers welcome Jose Urquidy back to the mound as they eye playoff glory with a crucial pitching boost

Tigers Activate Jose Urquidy as Playoff Push Intensifies

The Detroit Tigers are gearing up for a critical stretch as they chase playoff glory. With 84 victories, they are tied for the most wins in the American League and hold a commanding 8.5-game lead over the Cleveland Guardians in the division. Following a recent loss, the Tigers now have a magic number of just eight games to secure their postseason berth.

Pitching Challenges Amid Success

Despite their impressive standing, the Tigers’ journey to the playoffs has been anything but straightforward. The team heavily relies on Cy Young frontrunner Tarik Skubal, but the pitching staff has faced challenges. Alongside Skubal, only Casey Mize and Jack Flaherty have more than 20 starts this season. Mize has performed admirably with a 3.83 ERA, but Flaherty’s struggles persist, reflected in his 89 ERA+ despite some promising outings against top-tier teams.

In addition, Chris Paddack has transitioned to a bullpen role, while Charlie Morton battles a disappointing 6.09 ERA. The injuries to Reese Olsen and Jackson Jobe have further strained the rotation, leaving the Tigers in search of reinforcements as they aim for a deep playoff run.

Jose Urquidy’s Return from Injury

In a significant boost to their pitching depth, the Tigers are set to welcome back Jose Urquidy. The right-hander, who initially made his mark with the Houston Astros, has faced his share of adversity. Urquidy debuted in 2019 and quickly established himself as a reliable starter, accumulating a 3.81 ERA and 224 strikeouts over 271.1 innings from 2021 to 2022. He was a key member of the Astros’ rotation during their 2022 World Series victory, ranking third on the team in innings pitched that season.

However, an April shoulder injury sidelined Urquidy for much of 2023. After a brief return in August, he faced a setback that resulted in Tommy John surgery, effectively ruling him out for the remainder of that season. In March, the Tigers signed him to a one-year deal, with an option for 2026, as he began his recovery.

Rehabilitation and Impressive Performance

Urquidy’s rehabilitation has shown promise. Since beginning his recovery on August 3, he has made four starts at Single-A and six appearances at Triple-A, demonstrating his readiness to contribute. In 19.2 innings pitched, he has posted an impressive 3.20 ERA, striking out 16 batters while issuing only five walks.

As Detroit approaches the most pivotal phase of the season, Urquidy’s return could be crucial. While he may not play a central role in the division race, his experience and ability to eat innings make him an invaluable asset as the Tigers eye a playoff run. With the team needing more depth behind Skubal, Urquidy’s presence could be the difference-maker when the postseason arrives.
