Padres find relief as Jose Iglesias avoids major injury setback

The San Diego Padres, already grappling with Xander Bogaerts’ foot injury, faced another potential setback when Jose Iglesias was struck by a pitch on his left hand during Tuesday’s contest against the Cincinnati Reds. Fortunately, the news surrounding Iglesias is more hopeful than feared.

Following a series of X-rays, Iglesias offered an optimistic update on his condition. “It’s not broken,” he confirmed. “The x-rays were negative. Just a contusion, but there is some swelling in there for sure but not a big deal. We should be fine.” With Iglesias stepping in for Bogaerts, his health is crucial as the Padres intensify their efforts toward a postseason berth.

Iglesias has struggled to find his rhythm at the plate during this challenging transition. Since Bogaerts’ injury, the veteran shortstop has managed a disappointing .178 batting average, failing to provide the offensive spark the team desperately needs. In contrast, Bogaerts, who boasts a .262 average along with 10 home runs and a .717 OPS this season, has been a cornerstone of the Padres’ lineup. His production has dipped below expectations, especially in the third year of an extensive 11-year contract signed prior to the 2023 season.

As the Padres continue their postseason push, the return of Bogaerts appears imminent, promising a much-needed boost to the lineup. Currently sitting at 80-67, the Padres trail the Los Angeles Dodgers by 2.5 games in the NL West and hold a secure position in the second Wild Card spot in the National League. With the stakes high, every player’s health and performance will be pivotal in the coming weeks.
