Steelers’ RB Dilemma: Fantasy Managers Face Tough Choices for Week 2

As the dust settles from a lackluster Week 1, the Pittsburgh Steelers have left many fantasy football enthusiasts searching for answers. Heading into their Week 2 clash against the Seattle Seahawks, the uncertainty surrounding the running back landscape has fantasy managers grappling with critical start-sit decisions involving Kenneth Gainwell, Jaylen Warren, and rookie Kaleb Johnson.

Kenneth Gainwell’s Unlikely Workload

Gainwell emerged as a surprise player in the Steelers’ season opener, securing double-digit touches that no one anticipated. However, this unexpected increase in workload raises questions about his efficiency and future role.

For fantasy managers contemplating Gainwell’s prospects, the consensus is clear: he should remain on the bench for Week 2. Despite the volume of touches he received, his performance was far from impressive. While there may be a slight case for him in deeper PPR formats due to the potential for pass-catching opportunities, the general recommendation is to steer clear. Furthermore, with the possibility of a reduced workload following his unexpected involvement last week, it’s wise to exercise caution.

Jaylen Warren: The Best Option?

Amid the uncertainty, Jaylen Warren stands out as the only Steelers running back worthy of consideration for a start this week. While he’s not a guaranteed starter, he may serve as a FLEX option for fantasy managers looking to bolster their lineups. Warren’s strengths particularly shine in PPR formats, where his ability to make plays after the catch adds to his appeal. Notably, he was the only running back for Pittsburgh to find the end zone in Week 1, which further solidifies his standing as a potential asset.

Kaleb Johnson’s Limited Role

On the other hand, Kaleb Johnson appears to be a firm sit for Week 2. The rookie from Iowa had a minimal role in the season opener, logging just two snaps and securing a single carry. Given his lack of involvement, he should be left on the bench for the time being. Fantasy managers in deeper leagues may want to stash him on their roster, hoping for an increase in his workload as the season progresses, but starting him is not a viable option until he sees a significant rise in his snap count.

As the Steelers prepare for their matchup against the Seahawks, the running back situation remains fluid. Fantasy managers will need to weigh their options carefully, navigating the complexities of Gainwell’s inefficiency, Warren’s potential, and Johnson’s limited role to make informed decisions for Week 2.
