Cam Ward Backs Titans Receivers Amid Criticism Over Drops

Cam Ward maintains his confidence in the Titans’ receiving corps

The Tennessee Titans’ receiving unit faced a torrent of criticism following their disappointing performance in the season opener, where dropped passes proved costly. However, quarterback Cam Ward is standing by his teammates, refusing to assign blame for the missteps.

In his debut as a starting NFL quarterback, Ward guided the Titans to a narrow one-score loss against the Denver Broncos. While the overall performance of the team drew scrutiny, the most glaring issue was a series of dropped passes that marred their offensive rhythm. Out of Ward’s 28 attempts, he completed just 12, with nearly a third of those incompletions attributed to well-thrown balls that simply slipped through receivers’ hands.

The dropped ball that epitomized the Titans’ struggles came from Calvin Ridley, who misplayed a crucial pass over the middle as Ward sought to orchestrate a final drive for victory. Although Ward faced challenges himself—taking six sacks and losing a fumble—the heartache of falling short due to factors beyond his control was palpable.

As the Titans prepared for their home-opener against the Los Angeles Rams, Ward addressed the media, emphasizing his support for his receivers. “I am never going to get on those guys for dropping a ball,” he stated. “I’m going to throw a pick at some point in the season. So, bad plays are going to happen. The biggest thing is when we get back to the huddle, we have to always have a next-play mentality.”

Ward’s mindset reflects a broader understanding of the game, recognizing that mistakes are part of the sport. His belief in his teammates is unwavering, and he expressed confidence that the receivers would rebound. “I am not too worried about that – those boys are going to catch the ball,” he assured.

As the Titans gear up for their next challenge, all eyes will be on the receiving unit to see how they respond to the pressure and whether they can turn the tide in their upcoming matchup.
