Chris Boswell’s 60-yard dagger earns record AFC honor as Steelers’ ‘serial killer’ kicker reigns supreme

Chris Boswell’s 60-yard kick secures AFC record as Steelers’ clutch kicker shines

Chris Boswell’s resurgence reached new heights last weekend, as he nailed a career-best 60-yard field goal, propelling the Pittsburgh Steelers to a thrilling season-opening victory over the New York Jets. The remarkable feat earned him the AFC Special Teams Player of the Week honor, marking a significant milestone in his career. This accolade makes Boswell the most recognized player in Steelers history for this award, surpassing Jeff Reed with a total of five honors, as reported by TV reporter Missi Matthews.

Crucial Moment in the Game

With the Steelers trailing 32-31 and facing a daunting fourth-and-11 just beyond midfield, the team turned to Boswell, who delivered under pressure. His kick not only split the uprights but also had ample distance to spare, showcasing his impressive leg strength and composure when it mattered most.

Coach’s High Praise

Postgame, head coach Mike Tomlin offered high praise for Boswell, describing him as a “serial killer” on the field. This metaphor reflects Boswell’s cold-blooded efficiency and reliability, traits that have become increasingly apparent in his recent performances.

A Stellar Season Ahead

Boswell’s prowess as a kicker has been on full display, especially after an outstanding 2022 season where he completed 41 out of 44 attempts, including 13 of 15 from beyond 50 yards. His performance has solidified his status as one of the NFL’s elite kickers.

It’s been quite the turnaround for Boswell, who struggled in 2022 with just 20 successful kicks out of 28 attempts. Fast forward to 2023, and he has seemingly turned the tide, going 29-for-31 on field goals this season, including six out of seven from long distance.

Ongoing Excellence

As Boswell continues to impress with his kicking ability, his trajectory suggests a promising season ahead. His remarkable consistency and game-winning capabilities underscore his critical role within the Steelers’ lineup, as he aims to maintain his status as a top performer in the league.
