Walker Buehler seeks redemption with Phillies as robotic umpire debate surfaces

Walker Buehler’s journey through the major leagues this season has been anything but smooth. After contributing to the Los Angeles Dodgers’ 2024 World Series triumph, the Boston Red Sox took a chance on him, signing him to a one-year, $21 million contract. However, his tenure in Boston quickly soured, leading to his designation for assignment (DFA) as he struggled to find his footing.

A fresh start with Philadelphia

Now, Buehler has a chance to revive his career with the Philadelphia Phillies, who claimed him off waivers. Before making his anticipated debut against the Kansas City Royals on Friday, the Phillies opted to send him to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. This move allows Buehler to regain his form and adapt to the team’s culture before stepping onto the big league stage again.

Controversy over robotic umpires

While in the minor leagues, Buehler encountered the Automated Ball-Strike (ABS) system, a technology that has sparked considerable debate among players and fans alike. In a recent discussion, Buehler expressed his dissatisfaction with the system, highlighting its inaccuracies.

“I think it’s inaccurate,” Buehler stated. “In most of the stadiums, it’s not even actually on the plate. I think it shifts certain directions in certain ballparks. The human element is a huge part of this game. Starting pitchers who have pitched for a long time deserve certain parts of the plate that other guys don’t get.”

Buehler’s concerns reflect a broader apprehension among pitchers, especially as he adapts to a more nuanced approach to striking out hitters. Once known for his overpowering fastball, he now finds himself strategically working the edges of the strike zone to maximize his effectiveness. This season, during his 112.1 innings with the Red Sox, he posted a 5.45 ERA and struck out just 84 batters—numbers that underscore the challenges he’s faced.

A hopeful outlook with the Phillies

Despite the hurdles, Buehler is optimistic about his new opportunity in Philadelphia. He expressed gratitude to the Phillies for giving him a chance, acknowledging the depth and talent present within the roster. He hopes to contribute significantly to the team’s success as they aim for a strong finish to the season and a playoff run.

Buehler’s eagerness to embrace this new chapter is palpable, as he prepares to take the mound once again. His upcoming debut will not only serve as a personal milestone but also as a litmus test for the potential impact of technology on the game he loves.
