Tarik Skubal’s dominance on the mound positions him to clinch back-to-back AL Cy Young Awards over Boston’s Crochet

Date:

Tarik Skubal’s Dominance on the Mound

The Detroit Tigers are fortunate to have one of Major League Baseball’s premier pitchers leading their rotation. Tarik Skubal, a linchpin in the Tigers’ resurgence over the last two years, has consistently showcased his remarkable talent on the mound. After clinching the American League Cy Young Award in 2024, Skubal is once again a frontrunner for the prestigious honor this season, demonstrating an impressive mastery of his craft.

Skubal’s Stellar Campaign

Predictions from analysts are already highlighting Skubal’s chances of repeating as Cy Young winner. ESPN analyst Bradford Doolittle suggests that Skubal is poised to edge out Boston Red Sox ace Garrett Crochet for the award. Doolittle asserts, “Skubal should hold on… if only because he has shown zero evidence of slowing down his epic pace. Unless Skubal struggles, there seems to be no opening for Crochet to squeeze through, no matter how well he pitches.”

Comparative Statistics

The race for the Cy Young Award is tight, with both pitchers putting up compelling numbers this season. Skubal has made 28 starts, while Crochet has taken the mound in 29 games, creating a near-level playing field as both pitchers look to solidify their cases for the award.

Currently, Skubal leads the American League with a dazzling 2.10 ERA and boasts a 13-4 record. His 6.6 wins above replacement (WAR) also tops the AL charts, along with 222 strikeouts, a remarkable 0.856 WHIP, and an impressive 198 ERA+. In contrast, Crochet holds a solid 2.57 ERA and a 15-5 record, along with 228 strikeouts—leading all of MLB—but trails Skubal in other key metrics with a 5.5 WAR, 1.052 WHIP, and a 162 ERA+ over his 185.1 innings pitched.

The Edge Goes to Skubal

Despite Crochet’s slight advantage in strikeouts and innings pitched, Skubal’s superiority in WAR, WHIP, ERA, and ERA+ gives him the edge as the season progresses. The additional start for Crochet may not be enough to close the gap. Should the season conclude without either pitcher making further appearances, the AL Cy Young Award would likely land firmly in Skubal’s grasp.

Room for Error?

As Doolittle pointed out, for Crochet to overtake Skubal, the latter would need to falter in his final outings. Given Skubal’s current trajectory, such a collapse seems unlikely.

What makes Skubal’s performance this season particularly remarkable is that he is surpassing even his own impressive standards from 2024, when he first captured the Cy Young Award. His ERA this year is notably lower than the 2.39 he achieved in his award-winning campaign, illustrating a clear upward trend in his performance.

In what has been a thrilling season for the Tigers and their ace, the anticipation continues to build as fans and analysts alike watch closely to see if Skubal can secure back-to-back Cy Young titles.
