Jabrill Peppers embraces No. 40 with the Steelers, marking a new chapter in his NFL journey

Jabrill Peppers has officially settled on his jersey number with the Pittsburgh Steelers, symbolizing a fresh start as he joins his fourth NFL team. After signing with the Steelers and securing a spot on their 53-man roster, Peppers will wear No. 40, a number that carries a blend of history and expectation within the franchise.

A Look at No. 40’s Legacy in Pittsburgh

The most recent player to don the No. 40 for the Steelers was linebacker Devin Harper, who wore it during the 2024 season, although he did not see game action. The number has a storied past, most notably associated with safety Myron Bell. Bell first took the field in No. 40 after being drafted in the fifth round in 1994. Over his tenure with the Steelers, he recorded impressive stats, including 159 tackles, five forced fumbles, 3.5 sacks, and three interceptions across 80 games. After a brief stint with the Cincinnati Bengals, Bell returned to Pittsburgh, continuing his legacy in the iconic black and gold.

Peppers’ Journey Through Numbers

Before arriving in Pittsburgh, Peppers showcased his talents at the University of Michigan, where he wore No. 5. His collegiate career was highlighted by his recognition as an All-American and the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year in 2016. However, when he entered the NFL as a first-round pick for the Cleveland Browns in 2017, the league had yet to permit defensive players to wear single-digit numbers. This restriction led him to wear No. 22 during his first two seasons.

Following a trade to the New York Giants in 2019, Peppers embraced No. 21, which he wore throughout his three seasons with the team. His subsequent move to the New England Patriots in 2022 saw him choose No. 3, before reverting to No. 5 for his last two seasons in New England.

Navigating New Territory in Pittsburgh

Now, as he embarks on this new chapter with the Steelers, Peppers faces the challenge of adjusting to the roster’s existing number assignments. With Jalen Ramsey claiming No. 5 and Corliss Waitman taking No. 3, along with Chuck Clark in No. 21 and Juan Thornhill in No. 22, Peppers had to select a different number. Embracing No. 40, he adds his name to the legacy of the players who have proudly worn it before him.

As Peppers prepares to make his mark with the Steelers, fans will undoubtedly be eager to see how he contributes on the field, bringing his dynamic defensive skills and leadership to a team poised for success. With the Steelers looking to build on their storied history, Peppers’ journey continues, and his new number represents both a fresh start and the weight of tradition that comes with playing in Pittsburgh.
