Falcons find hope as London, Mooney, and Hellams return to practice

The Atlanta Falcons are recovering from a narrow defeat at the hands of division rivals, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The loss was particularly concerning after star wide receiver Drake London sustained an arm injury during the game’s final moments. With London poised for a lucrative contract extension, the implications of his health weighed heavily on the minds of fans and analysts alike. Speculation about his potential earnings has already surfaced, with some projecting an average annual value of $34-35 million if he continues to excel.

Injury concerns deepen

In addition to London, the Falcons faced a plethora of injury challenges, missing key players on both sides of the ball. Wide receiver Darnell Mooney has been absent since the onset of training camp, sidelined by a shoulder injury sustained while attempting to make a catch. His status for the previous game against the Buccaneers was uncertain, with the coaching staff evaluating whether he was truly ready to return. Falcons insider Tori McElhaney noted, “A lot of what the Falcons are looking for to decide on Mooney’s status is whether he is game-ready. Not really working through anything physically with the shoulder, more about having been off the grass for a month.”

Safety DeMarcco Hellams also found himself on the injury report after being added midweek, missing the season opener due to an undisclosed issue. His role was anticipated to be substantial, particularly in the secondary and on special teams, making his absence even more notable. Garrett Chapman from SI reported on Hellams, stating, “The third-year safety is expected to be a rotational piece for the secondary and special teams contributor. His status for Sunday’s game is in question after missing Thursday’s practice.”

Positive updates brighten the Falcons’ prospects

Fortunately, the Falcons received encouraging news on Wednesday, as all three players—London, Mooney, and Hellams—returned to practice. McElhaney confirmed, “Drake London, Darnell Mooney, DeMarcco Hellams will all be practicing today.” This development brings a wave of optimism to the Falcons’ camp as they prepare for a crucial Sunday night showdown against the Minnesota Vikings.

The potential return of London and Mooney is critical, as their presence on the field could significantly elevate the Falcons’ offensive capabilities. With a week to ensure their health, the team is hopeful that this trio will be ready to make an impact when the lights shine brightest. The Falcons’ upcoming game promises to be pivotal, and the return of these key players could be the difference between victory and defeat.
