Lions Revamp Practice Squad with Monty Rice Signing and Anthony Pittman’s Exit

The Detroit Lions have made significant adjustments to their practice squad as they gear up for their upcoming clash against the Chicago Bears.

Roster Changes Announced

In a recent announcement, the Lions confirmed the release of linebacker Anthony Pittman from their 16-man practice squad. In a direct response to this move, they have signed linebacker Monty Rice to fill the vacancy. Additionally, offensive tackle Devin Cochran has joined the practice squad, further reshaping the team’s depth chart.

Pittman’s Journey with the Lions

Pittman’s return to the Lions had initially raised hopes. Special teams coordinator Dave Fipp expressed his confidence in bringing back a player familiar with the system. He highlighted the importance of Pittman’s presence, stating, “It’s great knowing that you have a good player who’s obviously played in your system and can go in there and play right away; that’s obviously very comforting.”

Fipp reflected on Pittman’s growth, recalling how the linebacker transitioned from the practice squad to making impactful plays on the field. He praised Pittman’s determination, noting, “He took a chance and bet on himself… I love him more for it.” Despite his release, it’s clear that Pittman left a positive impression during his time with the team.

Introducing Monty Rice

Monty Rice now steps into the spotlight as a new addition to the Lions. The 26-year-old linebacker had a notable college career at Georgia, where he played from 2017 to 2020 before being drafted in the third round of the 2021 NFL Draft. After his time with the Tennessee Titans, New Orleans Saints, Atlanta Falcons, and New England Patriots, Rice is eager to continue his development with Detroit.

A league scouting report describes Rice as a “productive inside linebacker with average speed and athletic ability.” However, what he lacks in speed, he compensates for with a keen instinct for the game and a strong ability to find the football. The report also notes that while he can handle man coverage duties, he is likely suited for early-down situations.

Looking Ahead to the Bears Game

As the Lions prepare for their showdown against the Bears, these roster changes reflect a strategic effort to bolster their lineup. The addition of Rice, along with Cochran, may provide the depth needed as the team seeks to enhance its performance on the field. With the season still unfolding, both players will be looking to make their mark and contribute to the Lions’ success as they move forward.
